Solubility & Blending Suggestions

  • This oil is viscous at room temperature and may require special use instructions to blend, please see our FAQ section for details.
  • Dilute well and add drop by drop to your blends until the desired effect is achieved. We suggest using extremely small amounts in your blends to start with; Vanilla tends to ‘bloom’ (increase in aroma) in formulas and perfumes as they age, with the potential to become predominant.
  • Completely soluble in Fractionated Coconut Oil. Soluble in Jojoba but cloudy; will clarify upon standing with some sediment that settles to the bottom. Soluble in alcohol but some sediment will settle to the bottom. Sediment (particulate matter) can easily be filtered out if a clear dilution is required. Please see our Vanilla Absolute - Organic for a similar product that is more readily soluble in alcohol without the presence of sediment.

    Product Overview

Invaluable in natural perfumery, Vanilla Absolute smooths rough edges, warms floral blends, and softens coniferous notes. Ours has a very rich, sweet, dense, characteristic vanilla aroma, a faint bitter undertone, chocolate-like nuances, and a very deep balsamic body note. Please note that the vanillin content of this extract is greater than 8% (see our COA for the lot specific percentage) compared to a range of 3 – 15% vanillin in our Vanilla Absolute - Organic.

The vanilla pods for this absolute are organically grown in the SAVA region (Sambava, Andapa, Vohémar, Antalaha), also known as the ‘green triangle’ of Madagascar – it is the geographic origin for over two thirds of the world’s production. Although vanilla is grown in other areas of the world, farmers in Madagascar have long been producing this crop – their expertise evident in the vanilla pods’ exceptional quality. Fair Trade certified, with sustainability and ecological values upheld, our farmers are guaranteed fair pricing plus good health and safety standards for their families and communities.[4]

Vanilla, a flowering tropical plant of the orchid family, is a very costly and labor-intensive crop. It takes approximately 4-5 years after planting for vanilla to set its first blossoms and it takes 600 hand-pollinated blossoms to produce only 1 kilo of cured vanilla pods. Vanilla flowers are pollinated between November and January and continue to grow until the June or July harvest when the still-green pods are hand-picked and sorted by maturity. The pods are then blanched in hot water – alternately laid out in the sun by day and then ‘sweated’ by night – whereby an enzymatic process takes place and the vanillin molecule develops (a process that can take up to six months under careful scrutiny). Shortening this lengthy process leads to an inferior, but less costly product and is probably why synthetic vanillin has all but replaced the natural. No wonder true vanilla is such a precious commodity!

The fragrance of vanilla is one of universal appeal – the familiar aroma invites sensuality and confidence, conveys comfort, and softens the ambiance.[1],[2] Try blending it with your favorite essential oils, absolutes and CO2 extracts. To add a green note to vanilla, use Violet Leaf; adding traces of Celery or Caraway CO2 makes it sophisticated and intimate.[3]

For pre-blended and affordable dilutions of Vanilla, please see our high-quality Vanilla CO2, organic – 10% or Vanilla CO2 – 30%.
