Overview

Vanilla Absolute

Invaluable in natural perfumery, Vanilla Absolute smooths rough edges, warms floral blends, and softens coniferous notes. Ours has a very rich, sweet, dense, characteristic vanilla aroma, a faint bitter undertone, chocolate-like nuances, and a very deep balsamic body note. Please note that the vanillin content of this extract is greater than 8% (see our COA for the lot specific percentage) compared to a range of 3 – 15% vanillin in our Vanilla Absolute - Organic. The fragrance of vanilla is one of universal appeal – the familiar aroma invites sensuality and confidence, conveys comfort, and softens the ambiance.1,2  Try blending it with your favorite essential oils, absolutes and CO2 extracts. To add a green note to vanilla, use Violet Leaf; adding traces of Celery or Caraway CO2 makes it sophisticated and intimate.3

Vanilla, a flowering tropical plant of the orchid family, is a very costly and labor-intensive crop. It takes approximately 4-5 years after planting for vanilla to set its first blossoms and it takes 600 hand-pollinated blossoms to produce only 1 kilo of cured vanilla pods. Vanilla flowers are pollinated between November and January and continue to grow until the June or July harvest when the still-green pods are hand-picked and sorted by maturity. The pods are then blanched in hot water – alternately laid out in the sun by day and then ‘sweated’ by night – whereby an enzymatic process takes place and the vanillin molecule develops (a process that can take up to six months under careful scrutiny). Shortening this lengthy process leads to an inferior, but less costly product and is probably why synthetic vanillin has all but replaced the natural. No wonder true vanilla is such a precious commodity!

The vanilla pods for this absolute are organically grown in the SAVA region (Sambava, Andapa, Vohémar, Antalaha), also known as the ‘green triangle’ of Madagascar – it is the geographic origin for over two thirds of the world’s production. Although vanilla is grown in other areas of the world, farmers in Madagascar have long been producing this crop – their expertise evident in the vanilla pods’ exceptional quality. Fair Trade certified, with sustainability and ecological values upheld, our farmers are guaranteed fair pricing plus good health and safety standards for their families and communities.4

Aromatic Profile: Very rich, sweet, dense, characteristic vanilla aroma with a faint bitter undertone, chocolate-like nuances, and a very deep balsamic body note. Adds a warm vanilla note in natural perfumery and is an excellent fixative.

Appearance: Dark brown to reddish-brown liquid with a thick molasses-like consistency that may require special use instructions to blend. May contain a small amount of sediment.

Use: Natural Perfumery, Incense.

Blending Suggestions: Essential Oils, CO2 Extracts and Absolutes are highly concentrated extracts. For safety reasons, they must be diluted before use – this is standard protocol for aromatherapy and perfumery purposes. For how much to dilute, please see Dilution Solutions. This product is soluble in both fixed (carrier) oils and 190 proof alcohol; not soluble in water. For guidance on how to incorporate this product into the carrier of your choice, please see our FAQs section.

Completely soluble in Fractionated Coconut Oil. Soluble in Jojoba but cloudy; will clarify upon standing with some sediment that settles to the bottom. Soluble in alcohol but some sediment will settle to the bottom. Sediment (particulate matter) can easily be filtered out if a clear dilution is required. Please see our Vanilla Absolute - Organic for a similar product that is more readily soluble in alcohol without the presence of sediment. We suggest using extremely small amounts in your blends to start with; Vanilla tends to ‘bloom’ (increase in aroma) in formulas and perfumes as they age, with the potential to become predominant.

Blends Well WithAmbrette, Agarwood, Amyris, Balsam of Peru, Beeswax, Benzoin, Bergamot, Boronia, Caraway, Cardamom, Cedarwood (Atlas), Celery Seed, Chamomile, Roman, Cinnamon, Clove, Cocoa, Coffee, Coriander, Fir, Balsam, Frankincense, Geranium, Ginger, Hay, Helichrysum, Jasmine, Lavandin, Lavender, Lemon, Lime, Linden Blossom, Mandarin, Mimosa, Nagarmotha, Neroli, Nutmeg, Opopanax, Orange, Orange Blossom, Orris, Osmanthus, Patchouli, Rose, Sandalwood, Tangerine, Tonka Bean, Tuberose, Vetiver, Violet Leaf, Ylang Ylang. “[Vanilla] products lend an unsurpassed richness and depth to many types of sweet-floral or heavy ambre [sic] bases...”5

Safety Considerations: None known.6 Dilute before using. A patch test should be performed before use for those with sensitive skin.

Customer Reviews for Vanilla Absolute

Nice & sweet Review by

I usually find myself being turned off by Vanilla smells due to their cloying sweetness. I tried a sample of this Vanilla absolute and was delighted. It is a dark and very sweet vanilla, but surprisingly the sweetness isn't sickly, though it is strong. I can imagine that Vanilla absolute would have to be used sparingly or it would overpower anything else in a blend, or even alone. Now that I've tried this, I've got to try the infamous Bourbon Vanilla!
