Mosses, Mushrooms, and Fallen Leaves: Autumn Aromas for your Formulations
Written By: Robin Lander
The fragrance of fall is slowly unfolding all around us – the scent of dry fields, fallen leaves, and sun-warmed earth. Soon, the arrival of rains will contribute another layer with notes of damp moss, dark woods, and mushrooms emerging from the duff. For lovers of scent, this season of turning is a dream come true.
Why not bring these autumn aromas into your formulations? With deep, sensual, organic intensity, they can offer a sense of realism and atmosphere to your creations. Used as base notes or woven into base accords, many also have fixative qualities that can lend depth and longevity to your fragrances.
We’ll share a few of our favorite aromas for fall and explore how to use them for adding earthy, woody, mossy, and leafy complexity to your formulations, this season and any time of year.
Ultimate Aromas for Autumn
Dry, earthy, bark and pine-like top notes over smooth, rich notes of moss, wood, decaying leaf, fungus, lichen, and damp earth notes; deep, mysterious, evocative, and an excellent fixative with tremendous tenacity. Extracted from a lichen that grows mainly on oaks, the aroma of Oakmoss Absolute can bring a little faerie wood magic to your blends. Add a small amount to base accords with Patchouli and Vetiver for a dark, mossy, forest floor feel. For a classic fougère, or ‘fern’ fragrance, combine it with the sweet, new mown hay aroma of Tonka Bean, a floral heart that includes Lavender Absolute, and a Bergamot top.
Rich, creamy, multi-layered mushroom aroma with earthy, woody-mossy, salty, fatty, and subtly animalic nuances. With its smooth richness and modest tenacity, White Mushroom Extract best serves as a textural enhancer rather than a statement note. It’s an excellent modifier for heart and base note accords, bringing both creaminess and earthiness. It blends particularly well with Vetiver, Patchouli, and Oakmoss for atmospheric ‘wet soil’ effects. Or use small amounts to soften and round Rose accords, add depth to leathery bases with Labdanum, and enhance agrestic notes like Tobacco and Hay.
Deep, complex, dry, woody-mossy aroma with distinct notes of tobacco, cocoa, and hay along with animalic, salty, and earthy mushroom like undertones. Produced from the woody twigs and foliage that remain after the asparagus shoots have been harvested in the spring, this upcycled material is a unique perfumery ingredient that smells nothing like the vegetable. Pair it with or substitute for Tobacco or Oakmoss in dark, masculine cigar and leather compositions, chypres, dirty florals, or moody fougères. It can add tenacity to floral, Amber, woody, animalic, Agarwood, gourmand, and leather accords.
Deep, woody-green, balsamic aroma with spicy-jammy top notes over rich layers of animalic amber, damp earth and moss, and hints of hay, smoke and tobacco in the tenacious drydown. This unique extract is obtained from solvent extraction of the spent needles, twigs and branches that remain after the steam distillation of Cypress essential oil. Its smooth richness rivals Oakmoss, of which it is a sweeter, economical alternative for adding curious, mossy green and wet forest elements. Try it with Pine in forest perfumes, or with Labdanum, Sandalwood, and Vanilla in Amber bases.
Extremely rich, deep, earthy, sweet-herbaceous, somewhat spicy aroma, with ethereal, floral-sweet and wine-like top notes and a mellow, woody-balsamic body note; outstanding tenacity. Known as one perfumery’s finest fixatives, its versatility is another benefit, blending well with almost anything while providing both a foundation and a warm, sensual ambiance. Patchouli can be a star but doesn’t have to steal the show. Use it wisely to enhance earthy essences like Vetiver, Mushroom, Coffee, and Spikenard, or offer beautiful earthiness to florals like Rose and Jasmine, woods like Cedarwood, resins like Frankincense, warm spices, and citruses like Orange.
Woody, mossy, sweet hay-like, warm herbaceous aroma reminiscent of fine pipe tobacco; very tenacious. This extraction of cured leaves from the tobacco plant smells nothing like cigarettes or smoke but instead offers a surprisingly complex, sophisticated aroma closer to fallen leaves, sun-warmed hay, dried fruit, rich cigars, and leather. Its musky richness enhances gourmand notes like Vanilla, Cocoa, and Tonka Bean, or try it with Oakwood, Cognac, and Labdanum for an ‘armchair scotch and cigar around the fire’ kind of vibe.
Initial clean, earthy-rooty and green-grassy aroma that becomes deeper in the drydown with very light smoky notes; has an outstanding intensity and complexity of aroma with a very lush drydown. Vetiver is one of the aromas most evocative of wet earth and damp wood, and our Vetiver, India is the most intense option in our Vetiver collection. It’s a robust, fixative base note that blends well with a wide variety of aromas, giving a cool, wet, turned-earth or crushed stems and leaves quality to compositions. Use it to bring realism to Rose and floral accords or as a foundation for dark forest fragrances with Agarwood.
