DIY Calendula Recipes

Written By: Robin Lander

Calendula is a charming and vigorous garden plant with bright, toothy orange and yellow

blooms. Its name comes from the root word for “calendar,” well-known for its robust ability to

thrive in a wide range of climates and bloom for most months of the year. The traditional use of

Calendula is legendary – the flower petals are edible and add brilliant color to green salads, the

bright orange flower heads have been utilized as a fabric dye, and various extracts and

infusions of the plant have been revered in skincare and cosmetic preparations for hundreds of

years.

Did you know? The majority of Calendula sold on the market is an infused oil. Our Calendula is

not produced as an essential oil since many of the important constituents are fats and waxes,

not volatile aromatics. We offer the CO2 total extract which contains all the beneficial lipids,

phytosterols, carotenoids, and antioxidants Calendula is known for.

DIY Calendula Lotion Bars

Ingredients:

  • 80 grams Cocoa Butter (about 37 wafers)
  • 18 grams Jojoba Oil, Golden - Organic (about 22 ml)
  • 1 gram Calendula CO2 Total Extract (about 38 drops or 1.25 ml)
  • 12 drops Rosemary Antioxidant CO2 - Organic
  • 16 drops Lavender - Wild
  • 14 drops Orange, Sweet - Organic
  • 4 drops Chamomile, Roman
  • 2 Pipette, Measuring Stem
  • Small Silicone Molds
  • Instructions:

  • Place the Calendula CO2 and Rosemary Antioxidant CO2 in their original glass bottles/container in a heat-safe bowl and add enough hot water to warm the bottles without submerging them. Unscrew the caps slightly but don’t allow water to get inside.
  • Allow the CO2 extracts to warm up for 10-20 minutes. They will liquefy at 104° F.
  • Meanwhile, combine the Cocoa Butter and Jojoba Oil in a double boiler over low-medium heat. You can make a double boiler by placing a stainless steel or heat-proof glass bowl over a saucepan of water (not touching the water). Allow the ingredients to melt slowly and completely. Remove from heat.
  • Using a clean pipette, stir the Calendula CO2 and then add 38 drops to the melted mixture. Use a separate pipette to stir and add the Rosemary Antioxidant CO2 to the mixture. Stir the mixture with a silicone spatula to combine.
  • Add essential oils to the mixture and stir well to combine.
  • Pour the mixture into your molds. Allow the bars to cool completely. You can place the molds in the refrigerator or freezer to speed the process.
  • Remove bars from molds and store in airtight tins or jars for up to one year
