Not only will this citrus favorite lift the spirit, its also a star in beautifying body care and a joyfully fresh top note in fragrances. Its one of the most widely used essential oils for good reason. Read on to discover the many ways Sweet Orange can enhance your formulations.

Botanical History of Sweet Orange

The Sweet Orange tree (Citrus sinensis) is thought to be native to Asia, in the region between southwestern China and the Himalayas, where it has been cultivated for centuries.[1] Portuguese explorers introduced it to Europe in the 16th century and later to the Americas where it thrives today in areas such as the Caribbean, the US, and Brazil. Our Orange, Sweet Organic essential oil is currently produced in Mexico or the USA.

There are a few cultivars of Sweet Orange, including Valencia and navel oranges, as well as Blood Orange, the source of our tart and berry-like Orange, Blood Organic essential oil. In addition to their sweet pulp, Sweet Oranges have a non-bitter membrane, unlike citruses such as Bergamot, Grapefruit, and Bitter Orange, which have an intriguing bitter nuance in their essential oils. The Bitter Orange tree is a different species native to Southeast Asia (Citrus aurantium var. amara) that also yields Neroli, Orange Blossom, Orange, Bitter Red and Petitgrain oils.

Production, Storage, and Safety

Like most citrus essential oils, Orange, Sweet – Organic is cold pressed from the fresh peel, a by-product of the juice and flavoring industries, making it a sustainable material.  Since citrus oils are composed largely of very light, volatile aromatic compounds such as Limonene, they have a shorter shelf-life than most essential oils. For best quality, use Orange, Sweet – Organic within 2 years of purchase and refrigerate to help preserve freshness.

While many citrus oils can be photosensitizing, essential oils obtained from Citrus sinensis do not contain any compounds responsible for photosensitization.[2] However, we suggest that those who have fair or sensitive skin should use this oil with caution and perform a patch test before use.
