In Love with Jasmine – A Formulator’s Guide

With love in the air this week and a craving for spring, we’ve got flowers on the mind. Traditionally, roses are the chosen flower for expressing emotions this time of year, but there’s another floral beauty that’s certainly no wallflower. Rose may be known as the Queen of Flowers, but in perfumery circles Jasmine is revered as the King.

Lush, exquisite, and absolutely hypnotic, Jasmine is adored for its heady, animalic, and utterly sensual aroma. The name for the flowering plant comes from the Persian word yasamin, meaning “gift from god” or “fragrant flower.” In perfumery, while Rose and Jasmine are both foundational essences, Jasmine is generally considered more unisex and tends to appear more frequently in fine fragrance, estimated to be present in more than 80% of quality perfumes. Compared to Rose, Jasmine is typically sweeter, fruitier, and more animalic.

This animalic quality, the trait that makes Jasmine and other white florals so erotic, is largely due to the presence of indole, a molecule found naturally in certain plants as well as human and animal pheromones. Formulators value indole as an indispensable component for creating realistic and seductive white floral compositions and for adding warmth, intimacy, and a sense of living presence to fragrances.

But the allure doesn’t stop there. Jasmine also has a joyful, playful side along with numerous aromatic and skincare benefits. Its uplifting aroma appears in muscle and joint massage oils, chest and belly rubs, facial serums for dry or sensitive skin, high-end cosmetics and body care, hair tonics, and luxe cleansers. At the same time, it’s equally effective in nighttime blends, bedtime linen sprays, and evening bath oils, helping to create a peaceful, carefree atmosphere that soothes the spirit.

In formulations, Jasmine is a remarkably versatile essence that is easy to work with. Known for its harmonizing effects, it blends well with virtually everything. Jasmine Absolute, India

Jasmine Absolute, India has an intensely floral, sweet, and rich aroma with a somewhat musky, coumarin-like undertone. Our most popular Jasmine, it is the sweetest, deepest, and most tenacious of our Jasmine Absolutes. It is also our most fruity Jasmine, and more animalic, full-bodied, and robust than our Jasmine, Absolute, Egypt. Only a hint of this precious absolute is needed to impart balance, smoothness, and luxury to perfume creations.

Indole content: approximately 2.8%

When to use it: in perfumery for opulent white-flower accords, deep ambers, fantasy compositions, romantic blends, and in high-end cosmetics. Add 3-5 drops to every 1 oz of body lotion and mix well to create your own Jasmine scented lotion (approximately 0.5% dilution).

Jasmine Absolute, India - 10%

For a budget-friendly option, our Jasmine Absolute, India - 10% is a dilution of 10% Jasmin Absolute,India in 90% organic fractionated coconut oil. Wear it directly as a perfume or add to your body care formulations, oil-based perfumes, candles, soaps, and more.

Jasmine Absolute, Egypt

Our Jasmine Absolute, Egypt is the epitome of Jasmine elegance, exquisitely sweet with delicate nuances of musk, tea, and honey. Egyptian Jasmines present a more classic Jasmine profile, slightly warmer, lighter, and smoother than those of India. As our most economical Jasmine Absolute, it is often favored in fine perfumery when a more etheric, complex Jasmine is desired. If you’re seeking a beautifully balanced, honey-sweet, fresher, and less dense expression of Jasmine, this is the one for you.

Indole content: approximately 1-1.5%

When to use it: in perfumery for a more refined, classic, diffusive Jasmine aroma, in cosmetics and body care, and aromatherapy blends. If you’d like to use Jasmine in a diffuser, first blend Jasmine Absolute, Egypt with thinner essential oils such as Ylang Ylang or citrus oils like Bergamot or Orange, Sweet – Organic before adding to your diffuser.

Jasmine Absolute, Egypt - 10%

Indulge in the classic beauty of our Jasmine Absolute, Egypt with Jasmine Absolute, Egypt - 10%, diluted to a perfect 10% in 90% organic fractionated coconut oil. Elevate your oil-based body care products and aromatherapy blends or apply directly as a perfume – both affordable and irresistible!

Jasmin Sambac Absolute

Jasmine Sambac Absolute has a fresh natural greenness and fruity-floral aroma combined with a voluptuous body that is more sultry than sweet. Produced from a night-blooming species in India, it has distinct nuances of fresh-cut leafy green, banana, tea, orange blossom, and honeysuckle, along with intriguing indolic muskiness. Also known as Arabian Jasmine, it is our least sweet and most indolic Jasmine, with an exotic and powerful character that may be too dominating for some compositions but ideal in others.

Indole content: approximately 3.5-4.85%

When to use it: in radiant floral bouquets and sensual perfumes when you want a sense of green aliveness and indolic allure, in luxe body balms and solid perfumes, and romance blends. It’s lovely blended with Orange Blossom Absolute and Tuberose, enhancing their brightness and animalic depth.

Jasmin Sambac Absolute - 10%

For a budget-friendly option, our Jasmin Sambac Absolute - 10% is a dilution of 10% Jasmine Sambac Absolute in 90% organic fractionated coconut oil, perfect for wearing directly as a mesmerizing perfume or adding to oil-based formulations.

Jasmine CO2

Jasmine CO2 has a very sweet, delicate, ethereal floral aroma with subtle fruity and tea-like nuances and a gentle indolic undertone. Indian Jasmine flowers are first solvent extracted to create a waxy concrète, then further extracted with carbon dioxide. The result is a highly concentrated, viscous material with a very long-lasting, almost syrupy-sweet dry down. Solid at room temperature, this material requires gentle warming to liquify. However, it’s worth the effort for its brighter, less dense, more true-to-nature aroma that formulators appreciate for its realism.

Indole content: approximately 1.5-3%

When to use it: when you want a very sweet, gracefully long-lingering Jasmine that captures a wider range of aromatic molecules and living-flower character. Combined with a Jasmine Absolute, it creates a more complete Jasmine profile.
