Middle Notes: Aromatic Heart and Soul

Every good perfume has a story at its heart, an effusive intensity that defines its identity and character. Carefully layered at the core of a fragrance composition lies its middle notes, also known as heart notes, the essences of emotion, warmth, and soul. Middle notes act as the main body of a perfume, offering a rounded and harmonious transition between the fleeting first impression of the top notes and the deeply enduring, foundational base notes.
Expressive and dramatic, middle notes emerge in their fullness once the initial top notes begin to fade, typically lasting from 20 minutes to 2 hours or more. Often the most treasured and irresistible essences, they both complement and assert their influence on the aromas surrounding them. Middle notes are rich, complex aromas that balance freshness with depth, ranging in variety from exotic florals and fruity notes to more green, herbaceous, gourmand, or spicy aromas. Let’s explore some of our favorite middle notes and how to use them.
Very intense, diffusive, fresh, sweet-herbaceous with tea, soft tobacco, and leather-like undertones. Tenacious and fixative Clary Sage has harmonizing effects on a composition and is valued in classic colognes, amber perfumes, and musky accords. Incredibly versatile, it blends well with animalics, citruses, and fine florals such as Labdanum, Ambrette, Grapefruit and Jasmine.
Sweet, green, fruity floral with a rich floral, honey and tea undertone, turning sweeter in the drydown. Night-blooming Jasmine Sambac is a bit greener, more tenacious, and not as sweet as our Jasminum grandiflorum absolutes. Indispensable in perfumery, it rounds edges and harmonizes compositions, blending well with virtually everything, especially citruses and florals like Sweet Orange and Gardenia.
Smooth, suave, coumarin-rich, intense, sweet herbal-lavender floral. Lavender Absolute is dramatically richer and sweeter than the essential oil with an aroma that resembles being in a field of fresh blossoms. A favorite in fresh colognes, chypres, green forest, and new-mown hay compositions, it blends well with florals, woods and citruses such as Ylang Ylang, Oakmoss, Tonka Bean, and Tangerine.
Warm, rich, spicy-sweet, highly aromatic body note with hints of tobacco and cream and a woody drydown. In small amounts, Nutmeg Absolute adds interesting warmth and richness to floral blends, particularly Rose bases, and is beautiful in leather bases, black tea accords, and amber compositions. It blends well with earthy notes, woods, and florals such as Patchouli, Sandalwood, and Rose.
Orange Blossom Absolute – Fine
Intensely sweet, rich, warm floral with delightful freshness, depth and tenacity. Best when well diluted, our Orange Blossom Absolute – Fine closely resembles the aroma of fresh bitter orange blossoms and is the perfect warmly seductive floral heart in exotic, opulent, and ambery perfumes. A popular fixative, it blends well with citruses, florals, spices and woods such as Bitter Orange, Neroli, Black Pepper, and Cedarwood.
Sweet, deep, mellow, antique Rose aroma with a faint indole, spice and honeyed undertone. Grown and extracted at our farm in Bulgaria, our Rose Absolute has an enticing fresh green note that emerges in the drydown. Wonderfully hypnotic, only a small amount is needed to improve almost any perfume, blending well with just about anything, especially Vetiver, Jasmine, Sandalwood and Bergamot.
Extremely rich, clean, intensely sweet floral with a refined buttery undertone and a long, soft, sweetly floral drydown. Our exquisite specialty Tuberose is undeniably sensual, fresh, and heady with a touch of indolic muskiness. A powerful force in perfumery, it illuminates floral, amber, and exotic fragrances and lends depth and opulence to other white flowers such as Jasmine, Gardenia, and Orange Blossom.
Highly floral, intensely sweet, unusual and multifaceted with fruity, woody, and spicy/balsamic body notes and ethereal top notes. The most desirable of all the Ylang Ylangs, this premium fraction from the first 1-2 hours of distillation is prized for adding lift and lightness, elevating other florals while imparting volume, texture, and mystery. It blends well with florals, spices, and resins like Jasmine, Lavender, Clove, and Frankincense.
