How to Extend Precious Florals – Tips to Boost and Enhance
Written By: Robin Lander
Authentic floral absolutes and essential oils are among the most treasured materials in the natural formulator’s palette. The aroma of Rose, Jasmine, Neroli and Tuberose, for example, offer unmatched depth, beauty, and emotional resonance. However, the sheer volume of blossoms required for extraction, combined with care-intensive cultivation and harvesting, make precious florals some of the more costly and supply-sensitive essences we have to work with.
This presents a familiar challenge for formulators: how do I create a full, expressive floral heart in my composition without relying on high percentages of precious florals?
One reliable solution is to utilize extension when building your floral accord. With this method, carefully selected harmonizing essences are used to boost, round out, and prolong the floral aroma without losing the integrity of the original flower. We will share practical strategies and specific pairings to help you extend perfumery’s most beloved florals.
The Art of Floral Extension
The goal of extending a favorite floral note is not to replace it, but to:
· Support the floral’s natural facets
· Create the impression of greater floral volume
· Enhance diffusiveness and longevity
This can be achieved by pairing the floral with essences that share complementary facets, the same aromatic molecules, and/or provide soft fixative properties.
Extending Rose
The aroma of Rose is incredibly complex with floral, citrusy, green, spicy, and honeyed facets, offering many options for extension. For Rose, we want to help build the volume and longevity of aroma, especially in body care products that may require a higher volume of fragrance.
Our most rosy Geranium with a fresh, complex, rosy-sweet, green leafy aroma. Geranium is a classic Rose extender because it shares similar rosy monoterpene alcohols. Not only can it boost Rose, but it also adds lift and freshness to Rose and many other florals. Palmarosa - organic can be used for similar effects.
Sweet, fresh, and lemony, with a soft grassy-green undertone. Rich in citronellol and geraniol, key components of Rose oil, Citronella supports Rose’s top notes, adding freshness, naturalness, volume, and longevity to Rose and other floral compositions. Peppercorn, Pink will work similarly to add sparkle and diffusiveness, expanding Rose’s fresh, spicy top notes.
Warm, sweet floral, deep and slightly animalic, with notes of tart dried fruit, tea and leather. Rose By-Absolute is a sustainably upcycled oil solvent extracted from the spent Turkish rose blossoms that remain after distillation of Rose essential oil. It lends unusual and interesting Rose notes to formulations and can help extend Rose and Osmanthus Absolutes.
Extending Jasmine
The aroma of Jasmine is intensely rich, hypnotic, and highly concentrated. It takes over 1,000 pounds of fresh Jasmine blossoms to produce a single pound of Jasmine Absolute. Extending Jasmine helps manage product cost, especially for skincare and soaps, while also helping you maintain skin-safe dilutions that are well-rounded and long-lasting.
Ylang Ylang Complete - Organic
Powerful, extremely sweet, spicy, tropical fruity/floral with a green, woody undertone. Also known as “poor man’s Jasmine,” Ylang Ylang shares indolic and creamy floral notes that amplify Jasmine’s lushness. This unfractionated, ‘complete’ oil is a bold Ylang Ylang option that can also extend Tuberose and Neroli.
Rich, warm, sweet, somewhat woody/animalic-like aroma with soft notes of spice and tobacco and a deep balsamic body note. Vanilla sweetens and smooths compositions with familiar warmth, helping to round out rough edges. It blends well with almost anything, especially Jasmine, and helps extend the sensual dry down.
Sandalwood, Australian – Premium
An exceptionally smooth, very rich, sweet, creamy wood aroma with warm fresh undertones and good tenacity. Sandalwood is an excellent choice of subtle fixative that allows Jasmine and other florals to linger gracefully without dominating them.
Extending Neroli
Distilled from the blossoms of the Bitter Orange tree, Neroli’s beauty lies in its airy, white floral brightness. Because it’s a more delicate floral, care must be taken to choose extenders that complement and enhance Neroli’s complexity without disrupting its luminous aroma.
Petitgrain Bigarade, Paraguay – Organic
Fresh, leafy-green, floral, citrus aroma with soft Neroli-like notes and sweet-woody undertones. Although it doesn’t contain any of the blossoms, Petitgrain is distilled from the leaves and twigs of the same tree. Its beautiful green, etheric floral qualities can strengthen Neroli’s green facets and improve tenacity.
Green, leafy, with the mouth-watering aroma of citrus peel, a slightly bitter note, and a touch of floral undertone. A classic Neroli extender, Bergamot lifts Neroli’s bright, green top notes without overpowering. It also complements Neroli with sophisticated complexity, lending a ‘juicy’ quality. Orange, Bitter Red offers a sharper, greener alternative.
Very fresh, floral, soft green, herbaceous aroma with smooth diffusive notes. Lavender adds floral freshness to complement and round out Neroli and enhance its diffusiveness with subtle herbaceous notes. Lavender essential oil helps keep Neroli fresh, bright and uplifting, while the deeper, sweeter Lavender Absolute gives a richer, rounder, more honey-like, and tenacious aroma.
Extending Tuberose
Tuberose has an extremely rich, intensely sweet aroma with buttery, lactonic undertones. Extension can help reduce cost, manage its potent intensity, enhance volume, and carry the aroma without masking it.
Intensely sweet, highly floral, unusual and multifaceted aroma with fruity, woody, and spicy/balsamic body notes and bright, ethereal top notes. Ylang Ylang Extra - Organic adds lift, brightness, and volume while complements Tuberose’s creaminess. Ylang Ylang, Fine - Organic offers a deeper, more voluptuous option.
Rich, warm, creamy, buttery aroma of coconut with amazing tenacity. Coconut accentuates Tuberose’s buttery, oily-fatty undertones and complements its exotic floral notes while softening and balancing their intensity. It also lends excellent fixative properties, extending and adding volume to numerous florals, including Jasmine.
Very fresh, diffusive, warm, sweet yet somewhat bitter herbaceous aroma with a tea-like and soft tobacco undertone; very tenacious. Clary Sage adds fresh, herbaceous, subtle leathery and woody nuances to Tuberose, helping to smooth, extend, or gently modify Tuberose while improving longevity.
Adding Longevity with Soft Fixatives
Fixative notes are key for extending florals, but heavy materials can easily overpower delicate floral notes. Softer fixatives that work particularly well with florals are:
These fixative materials can help slow the evaporation of florals while allowing the floral heart to remain the star of the show. With Labdanum, Ambrette, and Benzoin, you may want to use only trace amounts. You can learn more about fixatives here.
Final Notes for Formulators
While there are no authentic substitutes for our most precious florals, careful extension allows formulators to craft compositions that feel luxurious and expansive without relying on high percentages of these rare materials. With thoughtful pairings and gentle fixatives, you can ensure your florals shine, evolve with complexity, and linger beautifully in your formulations.
