Product Overview

Please Note: If you are looking for Immortelle Essential Oil, please see our Organic Helichrysum SKU 424.

The aroma of our Immortelle Absolute is herbaceous, hay-like and honeyed, with a smoky tobacco and musk-like undertone; it has an extraordinary ability to round off and ‘bouquet’ a composition that may need ‘life’ and naturalness.[1]

Helichrysum italicum means ‘golden sun of Italy’ and is evocative of the stunning habitat of this plant in its bright maize-colored meadows. Immortelle is French for ‘immortal’ or ‘everlasting’ and refers to the straw-like flowers that appear living when, in fact, dried – in a bright yellow color as if frozen in time. This plant is part of the Asteraceae (daisy) family and is often called the 'curry plant' due to the unusual and pungent odor of the leaves. It is also the source of Helichrysum essential oil, a perennial staple for many aromatherapy enthusiasts.

In perfumery, Immortelle has traditionally been used in chypre, floral, and amber compositions; its warm, tobacco, tea, liqueur, and wood notes blend well with woody, fougère, or leathery accords, and its warmth can be used to illuminate compositions.[3] Perfume blogger N. further states that “Immortelle [absolute] is akin to the assoluta voice with the rich darkness of a contralto and the ringing bells of a soprano – it simply pierces through the thickest of compositions.”[4]

Gorgeous

I am impressed by the tenacity of this--everlasting absolute indeed! Will stay on skin morning to night. To me this smells like honey, a touch of brown sugar or maple (or is it caramel?), a light muskiness, and the slightest tobacco note peeking out in the very back. I don't detect anything green or herbaceous, unless it is very dry or resinous--this fragrance is equal parts powdery and pleasantly sticky. It brings to mind the color brown, homey kitchens, and a warm retro folksiness. Works well in balancing out the bluntness of absolutes like Cassie or Violet Leaf. I really really like this stuff, and yes, I agree it succeeds as a single scent too.

Lovely

Admittedly, when I first got this I was bracing myself for a very heady and intolerable aroma, but I was surprised at how nice this is. The descriptions are right on. This is a green, hay-like aroma with a darker musky undertone, but the best part about Immortelle is that it has a "golden"honeyed nuance that makes it pleasant. While I can see how this note could easily overpower a composition, it is not cloying or heady. Very nice and useful!

Impressive

Just blended an old-style French fougere using this Immortelle as the coumarin note. I had no problem mixing it straight into 190 ethanol at room temperature just by several minutes of shaking. The olfactory description is spot on with notes of sweet hay (though not as grassy) with light floral and honey undertones. It is also very long lived as after 18 hours on a strip it even outlasted the oakmoss within the blend. Nice product.

Wow!!

This is my favorite EO hands down! It's absolutely rapturous! It's a complete perfume in and of itself. I'm going to try adding a little benzoin though to hopefully extend the top notes. It's nice with labdanum but labdanum is distinctive and adds too much of its own scent. I just want to smell the immortelle :)

Flash Points: What They Mean for Formulators

You may have come across the term flash point when working with essential oils and wondered what it really means. Technically a safety specification, flash points are used to classify materials like essential oils for handling and transport, but they can also influence how you choose to formulate with them.
