Product Overview

Our Ylang Ylang Absolute has a powerful, intensely sweet, dense, balsamic floral aroma typically associated with Ylang Ylang essential oil, however the aroma has more depth and tenacity than that of our steam distilled Ylang Ylang oils. Ylang Ylang Absolute is considered a must-have for any perfumer desiring to create luscious sweet florals with greater tenacity and longevity.

Guenther explains that the absolutes “undoubtedly contain a number of high boiling components not present in the distilled oil, and which contribute greatly to their high fixation value. Being nonvolatile with steam, these high boiling substances are not carried over during distillation of the flowers... In general, the odor of the extracted oils is sweeter, warmer and more ‘velvety’ than that of distilled oils [and] reproduces that of the living flowers to a remarkable degree.”[1]

According to perfumer Alec Lawless, Ylang Ylang Absolute “can be used well below the level of conscious detection yet…still impart valuable body, some lift, and a harmonizing effect.”[2] Arctander states that it is one of the finest floral materials, blending “excellently with jasmine and rose materials…, Peru Balsam oil…, sandalwood oil, cassie, mimosa, etc. It is used in carnation, lilac, lily, narcissus, gardenia, violet, hyacinth, honeysuckle, peony, freesia, sweet pea, and countless other floral bases. Furthermore in...[Amber] perfumes with rose, sandalwood, opopanax, spice oils, … etc.” [3]

DILUTION NOTE: When this material is diluted in perfumer’s alcohol, there may be cloudiness (please see Appearance section). Guenther explains: “The solubility of Ylang Ylang oil, in general, is poor. This statement applies to all qualities (fractions). Usually from 0.5 to 3 [percent by] volume of 95 percent alcohol [is] required to give a clear solution, which often becomes cloudy on addition of more alcohol.”[4] Since Ylang Ylang Absolute shares similar chemical constituents with steam distilled Cananga oils, cloudiness may also occur when the absolute is diluted with 190 proof alcohol. This precipitates upon standing and can be filtered out, leaving a perfectly clear (non-cloudy) dilution.

My favorite Ylang

Rating

This, in my opinion, is the nicest version of Ylang Ylang, along with the Complete Comoros. Ylang Ylang absolute is what I can see being called the "poor man's Jasmine", as it is not that far removed from it. Yet, it's still unique on it's own. Unlike the other versions, the absolute is not as obnoxious but it has more depth and is world's apart from I, II, and III. It is darker, more rich, and sweet. I can definitely see the Coumarin references as well, having a cherry almond-like nuance. It has a bubble gum type sweetness, yet it's not loud or sickly sweet at all. It's actually quite mellow. It's dry down is sensual and musky, revealing a nuance that is VERY much like Orange Blossom absolute. I kid you not, it has that same dusty, grape-like drydown that Orange Blossom absolute does. Each version of Ylang Ylang reveals it's own character, but if you're looking for a Ylang Ylang with more depth, you cannot go wrong with this one.

Gorgeous

Rating

I really don't like ylang ylang in general, I never have. Mainly because even in extreme dilution I've always gotten a really sharp, cloying, almost "gasoline" or "solvent" type odor from even the nicest of ylang ylangs. I honestly could just never see the allure of ylang ylang in even the most extreme rate of dilution, even though I have tried a wide range of them from a wide range of suppliers. I decided to try the absolute on a whim because I know that often times the absolutes just have that little something extra in the odor profile that essential oils don't. This didn't disappoint. There is none of that sharpness nor "gasoline" or "solvent" odor with this - just pure, rich, heady, creamy goodness. You MUST dilute this down in order to fully appreciate the aroma. It's simply too strong in its pure form. Another excellent ylang ylang is Eden's Ylang Ylang Complete - Fine. Nicely done!

Wait for it...

Rating

This absolute starts out sweeter and more candy-like than EB's other ylang ylangs, but the real magic happens in the drydown. The sweetness turns into a deep muskiness that up to now I'd only found in the best jasmine and orange blossom absolutes. Just a small amount of this absolute along with ylang ylang extra turned a blah fragrance into something special.

Disappointed

Rating

I was hoping the absolute would be noticeably different. Instead, it smells the same as the essential oil to my nose. I was hoping for a less sharp aspect, maybe something a little creamy. I'll just stick with the extra or complete essentials.

Getting to Know Geranium – A Rosy, Green Floral

Few essential oils strike the balance between beauty, versatility, and utility quite like Geranium. Bold, green, rosy-floral, and endlessly adaptable, it’s both a formulator’s ally and a perfumer’s force of nature. Native to South Africa, flowering Geranium was brought to Europe in the 17th century and is now cultivated globally for its remarkably rose-like aroma and wide-ranging benefits.
