Formulating with Peppermint Essential Oil – Cooling Inspiration for Summer and Beyond

Written By: Robin Lander

The radiant warmth of summer brings many gifts and opportunities but also comes with its challenges. Fortunately, nature provides its own refreshing solution. One spirited botanical flourishes during the warmer months, delivering the ultimate icy-cool aroma for a hot summer’s day: Peppermint.

True Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) is one of over 25 species of mint in the Lamiaceae family. The herbaceous perennial is believed to be a naturally occurring hybrid of Spearmint (M. spicata) and Watermint (M. aquatica), both native to parts of Europe, Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East.

Peppermint’s distinctly minty aroma is largely due to menthol, the monoterpene which gives the essential oil its crisp, diffusive scent and signature cooling sensation. In fact, early botanists named Peppermint for its pungent, spicy-scented foliage that leaves a tingling sensation like hot peppers.

It’s this intensely cooling nature that makes Peppermint essential oil a powerful addition to your warm-weather formulations – and an indispensable ingredient for every formulator’s collection. We’ll explore our Peppermint offerings and ways to use them, from summer favorites to year-round creations.

A Brief Botanical History

While Peppermint and its parent species have been used for thousands of years across the world, the first official botanical record of this hybrid dates to 1696 when the plant was found growing alongside streams and ponds in rural England [1]. Quickly recognized for its strong, superior aroma and efficacy, commercial cultivation and distillation of Peppermint were booming near London by about 1750. Early growers even tried to keep Peppermint’s botanical identity a secret in hopes of a monopoly on the prized premium oil.

Alas, despite human whims, plants often have greater plans. The secret of Peppermint – and a few smuggled cuttings – eventually escaped and its true identity became known. Cultivation spread rapidly, inevitably making its way to colonial America where commercial production of the oil soon rivaled England’s. Before long, Peppermint had naturalized throughout much of North America where it continues to thrive today.

Modern Peppermint Production

The US is currently the world’s largest producer of Peppermint oil with production concentrated in the Pacific Northwest and the Midwest. It’s also cultivated in South America, Europe, Russia, northern Africa, India, Australia, and other countries.

Peppermint prefers a warm, moist habitat especially along streams, wet meadows, and marshlands. As a hybrid, the plant can only reproduce vegetatively, spreading easily through underground runners. The tender leaves are harvested while the plant is in early bloom and menthol content is at its peak, then slightly wilted before steam distillation.

We offer three Peppermint essential oils, each with its own aromatic character shaped by country of origin and terroir. Subtle differences in sweetness and freshness make each one especially suited to different types of formulations.

Peppermint Essential Oil in Formulation

From refreshing body and skincare to invigorating aromatherapy, Peppermint lends itself to an impressive variety of formulations. Here are a few of our favorite ways to enjoy its cooling, elevating aroma. Any of our three Peppermint oils can be used in the following preparations.

Aromatherapy Inhaler

A Peppermint inhaler is an excellent companion on long road trips, flights, and other journeys where it can help rouse the spirit and ease the tummy. Place a small piece of cotton ball inside a ¼ oz Amber Glass Bottle. Add 5 drops Peppermint and 5 drops Lemon - Organic, allowing them to fully absorb into the cotton. Cap and label the bottle, then tuck it in your travel bag. To use, open the bottle, hold it under your nose, and breathe slowly and deeply 2-5 times.

After-Meal Belly Rub

Post-indulging, wind down with a Peppermint belly rub. Add a half teaspoon of carrier oil or lotion to your hand, along with one drop Peppermint and one drop Orange, Sweet - Organic. Gently massage the blend over the abdomen in a clockwise motion.

Cooling Body Mist

How about a refreshing, cooling body spray to awaken your senses? For an uplifting floral combination, add 10 drops Peppermint and 7 drops Ylang Ylang Complete - Organic to a 2oz amber glass bottle with a spray top. Top off with distilled water or your favorite hydrosol. Shake well before each use. Mist lightly over the body, carefully avoiding spraying in the eyes or on mucous membranes.

Diffuser

When used in a diffuser, Peppermint helps create an energizing atmosphere well suited for mornings, while studying, or working. Try our Wake Up diffuser blend: add 5 drops Peppermint, 5 drops Basil, Sweet ct Linalool - Organic, and 5 drops Lemon - Organic to your diffuser, following the manufacturers instructions. Diffuse for 30-60 minutes.

Foot Bath

An evening foot bath with Peppermint is especially nice after standing all day. Add ½ cup Epsom salt to a basin or tub of warm water. Add 4 drops Peppermint and 4 drops Lavender, Bulgaria - Organic essential oils to a spoonful of carrier oil such as Fractionated Coconut Oil - Organic and stir into the footbath just before putting your feet in.

Head and Temple Roll-On

When intensity goes to your head, reach for this cooling roll-on. Add 5 drops Peppermint and 5 drops Lavender, France - Organic to a 10 ml rollerball bottle. Top off with Jojoba Oil, Golden – Organic and insert the rollerball top. Shake gently to blend. Apply to the temples, head, and back of the neck. Avoid getting it near the eyes.

Muscle and Joint Massage

Peppermint has a wonderfully cooling feel in a joint rub or massage oil, especially after a workout or overexertion. Get our formula for a Cooling Joint Rub with Frankincense and Peppermint here.

Outdoor Spray/Pest Deterrent

Deter unwanted insects and pests by placing a few drops of Peppermint on cotton balls in closets, cupboards, and entry points. Peppermint is also an effective ingredient in insect-deterring formulations. Learn how to formulate an Outdoor Bug Spray here.

Perfumery

As a perfume ingredient, Peppermint can be included in trace amounts in top note accords to provide sparkling freshness and lift to compositions. Popular in warm-weather fragrances, Peppermint enhances green, herbaceous, woody, spicy, and citrus aromas. Renowned natural perfumer Mandy Aftel likes hints of mint for bringing focus to florals or a fresh greenness to floral blends [2].

Scalp Oil

When diluted in a scalp oil, Peppermint can help invigorate, cleanse, and clarify hair follicles to help improve the appearance of hair growth. To a 1 oz. glass bottle with pump, add 15 mls each of Argan Oil - Organic and Jojoba Oil, Golden - Organic, along with 4 drops Peppermint, 5 drops Rosemary CT Cineole – Organic, 4 drops Lavender, Bulgaria – Organic, and 3 drops Cedarwood, Atlas – Wild. Massage a few drops of the blend into the scalp 1-2 times per week. Leave on for 30 minutes to 2 hours, then shampoo as usual.

Steams

When used in a steam, the aroma of Peppermint helps refresh respiratory passages. As part of a facial steam, it’s beneficial for oily or congested skin. To enjoy an aromatherapy or facial steam, add 1 drop Peppermint and 2 drops Eucalyptus Narrow Leaf - Organic to a bowl of hot water, cover head with a towel and lean over the bowl, close eyes, and breathe deeply for 5-10 minutes.

Looking for Something Softer? Try Spearmint

For a less intense mint aroma, especially in formulations for children or elders, you may want to try our Spearmint – Organic or Spearmint, USA. Sweeter and softer than Peppermint, it has a markedly different constituent profile, with carvone and limonene being the predominant monoterpenes and very little menthol and menthone.

While Spearmint can be used similarly to Peppermint, it’s not necessarily interchangeable for every application. Spearmint has a more calming, comforting aroma with gentler effects. It’s suitable for use in skincare and cosmetics and is a nice choice for evening diffuser blends, baths, belly rubs, and mouthwashes.
