Product Overview

Unlike the synthetic Amber perfumes that are commonly sold, Fossilized Amber Oil has a completely different aromatic profile. The extraction process yields a dark, viscous oil with smoky, resinous, leathery, tar-like, woody-dry notes and hints of Pine and balsamic overtones. The aroma is not sweet at all and because of this it is not often used as the main note in a perfume unless modified with other aromatic oils. NOTE: This product is diluted for ease of use and contains 5% Fossilized Amber Oil in 95% Sunflower Oil – Organic. For the pure and undiluted version of this oil, please see our Amber Oil, Fossilized.

While there are several sources for Amber throughout the world, Eden Botanicals is the sole source in North America for this rare form of Fossilized Amber Oil. Compared to the oil extracted from Baltic Amber, our Fossilized Amber Oil is extracted from 35-million-year-old Himalayan fossilized tree resin.[1] Unlike our oils from living plants, there is no essential oil that can be directly obtained from the fossilized resin. Instead, the oil comes from a process called “dry distillation” whereby the Amber resin is processed over high heat until an oily substance is obtained.[2]

When used in trace amounts, Fossilized Amber provides unique and interesting nuances in natural perfumes. It makes an excellent fixative and base note. This product is diluted for ease of use and contains 5% Fossilized Amber Oil in 95% Sunflower Oil – Organic. For the pure and undiluted version of this oil, please see our Amber Oil, Fossilized.

Unsatisfactory. Should be diluted in TEC, not sunflower

Rating

In general, I adore Eden's products and have been a loyal customer for many years, but am deeply disappointed with this product. Such a precious material as this should absolutely not be diluted in Sunflower oil, but in TEC, as with other fine botanicals such as Flouve - that Eden also sells and dilutes in TEC at 40% (I got samples of the Flouve with my last ordered and I loved it!). I would strongly encourage Eden's team to offer the remaining stock at a heavily discounted price while updating the diluent to TEC, which yes is more expensive than Sunflower oil, which of course might be more expensive than this version but I would happily pay more for a stable product that will not go rancid/oxidize. I regret purchasing this as I cannot use it for my intended purpose and have now had to place another new order for the pure material that I will need to dilute myself using TEC. I am very disappointed with this product and I sincerely hope that Eden will consider my advice (and the other comments above) and either dispose of this faulty product and/or offer it at a heavily discounted price and offer a new TEC diluted version for sale in place of it Again, I would be willing to pay more for Fossilized Amber in TEC that provides the kind of quality assurance that the product will not easily oxidize or become rancid. I don't think Sunflower oil is a suitable diluent for a material like this that is mostly used for perfumery, in contrast with other materials you sell that are used in other kinds of applications for which this carrier would would make sense.

Reply from Eden

Hi Melanie, Thank you for your inquiry. We do not dilute products such as Flouve and Oakwood Absolutes into TEC. This is done by the manufacturer as the pure ingredient is extremely difficult to use and this allows for a product that is pourable and easily incorporated into a formula. We offer some of our products diluted in either sunflower or fractionated coconut oil as a more affordable option to costly oils and also as an easier solution to working with more viscous ingredients. We suggest that if you want to use TEC as a solvent that you purchase the pure ingredient, not the dilution. Thanks for understanding.

Mountain jinja in the summer

Rating

When I first opened my sample of this, the image that instantly came to mind was that of an old Shinto shrine (jinja) in Japan in the summer. It smells like weathered stone, wet from a sudden rain shower and baking under a blazing summer sun. It smells like old wooden beams steeped in centuries of smoke from thousands of incense sticks. It smells like rich earth and ancient trees, leaves fluttering in gusts of wind from the storm on the horizon. I plan to try to use this in some perfume blends, but I might also try to make myself a sort of sacred space blend for diffusing, maybe with a little palo santo or sage and something green-smelling. I was going to buy a bottle of this, but then I decided to challenge myself to make my own dilution instead. Still, if mine doesn’t turn out as nice as this, I’ll be back to buy myself some!

Buy pure Amber Oil insted

Rating

The sunflower goes rancid pretty quickly and spoil the mix. Buy the pure Amber Oil instead and dissolve it in ethanol yourself. Much better outcome.

I can only smell the sunflower oil

Rating

I ordered 4 oz of this because a friend had some and I fell in love with the smell. For some reason you can only smell the sunflower oil and nothing else in the bottle I received. I’m quite disappointed as I was looking forward to it. I guess I should've gotten the undiluted. From the Oil Room: Please feel free to return the bottle for a credit.

Mysterious and Bewitching like Forest Sprites!

Rating

Oh, I love this one! It is intriguing. I tried it yesterday and gave up: I could not smell anything. This is the first EO I'm sampling today, and I touched the very tip of the sample vial: right away, I smelled its warmth! Silly me tried the Amber blends when this is exactly what I was looking for all along. It's got a come-and-go scent that does not overpower and yet lingers. It's warm, it's resinous and a tad smoky and teases with its "invisibility" quality. This one conjures up magical visions of fairies and sprites. I love that it's already diluted for me. It would make a great solo scent and I look forward to blending with it. I think it shall be a bottom note and a great substitute for those overwhelming orientals that natural perfume sellers always use and don't fit my personality. :)
