Revitalizing Hand Balm for Mom and Caregivers in Your Life

Written By: Robin Lander

It is a joy to receive a helping hand when needed, and for many, it’s just as rewarding to lend one. This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating all the caregivers in our lives who generously give their support and guidance every day.

To honor them, we’ve created a DIY recipe for a creamy, oil-based hand balm designed to soften and smooth hardworking hands. With select ingredients known for their conditioning and brightening properties, this anhydrous formula delivers deep moisture with a lightweight feel. We’ll highlight what’s special about these nourishing oils, followed by a heartfelt, giftable recipe.

Cacay Seed Oil

Cacay Seed Oil is the star of this formula and the ideal choice for beautiful hands. Naturally rich in retinoids (precursors to vitamin A), vitamin E, and linoleic acid, it can help improve the appearance of dark spots, imperfections, uneven texture, and elasticity. Cacay (pronounced Kah-KAI) supports the skin’s own protective barrier against water loss, provides superior emollient properties without heaviness, and offers long-lasting moisturization.

Plum Kernel Oil Organic

Plum Kernal Oil deeply moisturizes dry skin with a lightweight texture that conditions quickly. With full-spectrum vitamin E and beneficial fatty acids, it lends antioxidant-rich and protective moisture-retention to help improve skin softness and tone. It’s also a winner in this formula because it has a luscious scent like almond marzipan and cherries that pairs beautifully with the cocoa butter.

Jojoba Oil, Golden Organic

Humectant and emollient, Jojoba Oil is composed of liquid wax esters that closely mimic the oils in our skin. It’s especially beneficial in hand care because it softens dry skin, increases suppleness, soothes cuticles, and strengthens nails. Rich in vitamin E and antioxidants, Jojoba Oil helps add stability to skincare formulas while ensuring a smooth and silky feel.

Fractionated Coconut Oil Organic

Ultra lightweight Fractionated Coconut Oil softens and hydrates quickly without feeling greasy. It nourishes skin, cuticles, and nails, leaving a soft, protective layer of moisture. Fractionated Coconut Oil enhances the other oils it’s combined with, improves overall spreadability of the formula, and with its strong resistance to oxidation, adds stability to the balm.

This recipe also includes cocoa butter and beeswax to help seal in moisture and add structure, and a bit of arrowroot powder to reduce greasiness and give the balm a smooth, velvety finish. These can be found at most health food stores or online.

Ready to get started? Here’s a DIY recipe for a creamy, skin-softening hand balm that’s excellent for dry, mature, or overworked hands.

Revitalizing Hand Balm

Ingredients:

27 grams Cacay Seed Oil (approximately 30 ml)

27 grams Jojoba Oil, Golden Organic

16 grams Fractionated Coconut Oil Organic

14 grams Plum Kernel Oil Organic

20 grams Cocoa Butter

13 grams Beeswax*

3 grams Arrowroot Powder (about 1 teaspoon)

Directions:

1)      Use a kitchen scale or similar to weigh out the ingredients and have them ready. This recipe comes together quickly.

2)      Grate the beeswax (or use beeswax pellets) to help it melt quickly and easily at a lower temperature. Grate or break up the cocoa butter into small pieces.

3)      Using a double boiler (or a stainless-steel bowl above a pot of hot water), slowly melt the beeswax, cocoa butter, Fractionated Coconut Oil, and Jojoba Oil over low heat, stirring until just melted. Be careful to avoid overheating.

4)      Remove from heat and quickly add the Cacay and Plum Kernel Oils, stirring well to combine.

5)      Allow the mixture to cool for about one minute until it just begins to look cloudy on the edges, then sift in the arrowroot powder (important to avoid clumps) and stir vigorously until smooth.

6)      Stir continuously as it the mixture cools (about 2-4 minutes) to create a creamy, opaque texture.

7)      Pour into a clean glass jar before fully set. The balm will continue to thicken as it cools.

Makes one 4 oz. jar. Store in a cool place and use within 6 months.

*Plant-based candelilla wax can be used as a vegan substitute for beeswax. Because it is firmer, it is typically recommended to be used in recipes at ½ to 2/3 the amount of beeswax.

To Use the Balm:

Apply a small pea-sized amount to hands and massage in. A little goes a long way. For best results, apply to slightly damp hands.

Whether you’re treating yourself or someone special this week, we hope you’ll take a moment to enjoy the love. And whenever you need a helping hand with your formulations, don’t hesitate to reach out – we’re here for you!
