Morning and Evening Essential Oils: Aromatics to Support Your Daily Rhythm

Written By: Robin Lander

If you happen to reside in a country that observes Daylight Savings Time, then you know just how dysregulating the time change can be. The ‘spring forward’ is often considered the most difficult, as the rapid shift can disrupt our circadian rhythm and leave us in a foggy funk that feels like jet lag. And let’s not even get started on getting up ‘earlier.’

Essential oils can help ease this transition and smooth the way to our new beat. Bright and enlivening aromas can help us rise and shine when the morning comes too soon, while calm and peaceful aromas can assist with winding down, especially when we know we should be heading to bed earlier than we feel like.

In this article, we will share some of the best essential oils for morning and evening, along with a few simple and practical ways to use them.

Morning Essential Oils - Energizing and Invigorating

Lemon - Organic

Intense, lemon-fresh aroma with a zesty, tangy/tart top note. If you’re up before the sun, bring in a little sunshine with the aroma of Lemon. The scent is the epitome of clean, ready to brighten the spirit, center the mind, and promote an optimistic outlook. Try Lemon in a diffuser, room spray, or aromatherapy inhaler.

Eucalyptus, Blue Gum

Powerful, refreshing, cineolic aroma with green, camphoraceous notes. A well-loved classic, Blue Gum Eucalyptus is highly diffusive, cleansing, and a favorite in diffusers, massage oils, chest rubs, baths, and saunas. Add a few drops to a washcloth on the floor of the shower and enjoy its awakening aroma as the steam rises.

Rosemary ct Cineole

Strong, fresh, smooth yet diffusive, woody-herbaceous aroma with a somewhat minty-green back note. On those busy mornings when you need an extra nudge, the scent of Rosemary cheers you on like your own personal coach. Combine Rosemary and Peppermint together in a diffuser for a rousing, refreshing treat.

Pine, Himalayan Blue

Strong, crisp, camphoraceous, pine-like aroma with a dry balsamic body and a fresh cooling facet. Himalayan Blue Pine is revitalizing in muscle and joint massage oils, especially if you wake up feeling overworked. Add it to a morning bath and breathe in the fortifying aroma of the forest to start your day.

Peppermint, India – Organic

Fresh, candy-sweet, deep and strongly minty aroma with a powerful menthol and sweet balsamic undertone; the sweetest and most minty of our Peppermint oils. Cooling and refreshing Peppermint is no match for morning sluggishness. Try it diluted in a lower back massage oil with Himalayan Blue Pine and get ready for takeoff.

Basil, Sweet ct Linalool - Organic

Strongly green, faint anise-like, sweet herbaceous scent with a rich balsamic undertone. The aroma of Sweet Basil promotes a sense of clarity and vitality. Try Basil along with Lemon and Rosemary in an aromatherapy inhaler for an inspiring blend that’s helpful before studying, exercising, or during an early morning commute.

Ways to Use Morning Essential Oils

Lower Back Massage

Add 2 total drops of your favorite morning oils to ½ teaspoon of carrier oil or lotion and massage into the mid to lower back (Example: 1 drop Peppermint and 1 drop Pine into ½ tsp Fractionated Coconut Oil - Organic).

Diffuser

Drop 10-15 total drops of morning essential oils into a diffuser (follow your diffuser manufacturer’s instructions) and diffuse for 30-60 minutes.

Aromatherapy Inhaler

Place a small piece of cotton inside a ¼ oz Amber Glass Bottle or a small jar. Add 10-12 total drops of morning essential oils to the cotton. Cap and label the bottle. To use, open the bottle, hold under the nose, and breathe slowly and deeply 2-3 times.

Evening Essential Oils – Tranquil and Peaceful

Bergamot – Organic

Green and leafy with the mouth-watering aroma of citrus peel, a slightly bitter note, and a touch of floral undertone. Bergamot has a wide spectrum of applications, from clarifying skincare to fresh colognes to uplifting aromatherapy blends. When used in the evening, it promotes a sense of serenity and is lovely when diluted in a carrier oil for an after-dinner belly rub.

Chamomile, Roman

Powerfully diffusive, fresh, sweet-warm fruity/herbal aroma with green apple peel and pear-like notes. Our special Roman Chamomile is distilled from plants grown in Oregon’s Willamette Valley in the Pacific Northwest of the USA. Particularly helpful in children’s blends, or for those feeling grumpy or impatient, it’s perfect in a pillow spray with Lavender or Bergamot.

Lavender – High Elevation

Smooth, herbaceous, green-floral aroma, with a subtle sweet coumarinic undertone. When it comes to bedtime, Lavender essential oil is a dream. While all true Lavender oils (Lavandula angustifolia) can be helpful, typically the higher the elevation at which the plant grows, the higher the linalyl acetate – the ester revered for its ability to calm the spirit.

Marjoram, Sweet - Organic

Very fresh, warm, sweet/spicy aroma with a mildly pungent, herbaceous-woody undertone. The comforting aroma of Sweet Marjoram will envelop you in peaceful warmth, helping the cares of the day slip away. It’s excellent in a relaxing evening bath with Lavender and Bergamot.

Vetiver, Haiti

Deep, heavy, slightly sweet and resinous, with pronounced woody, earthy, root-like notes and light smoky undertones. Vetiver is the ultimate aroma for grounding and centering. Our Vetiver, Haiti is beneficial in meditation blends, calming foot massages before bed, in baths with Lavender, or in a rollerball blend with Ylang Ylang and Bergamot.

Ylang Ylang Complete – Organic

Powerful, extremely sweet, warm, bold tropical, fruity/floral aroma with a light green, woody undertone. This ‘complete’ distillation renders a full spectrum of beneficial aromatic constituents, ideal for aromatherapy and cosmetics. Invite a bit of the sensual into your evening routine with Ylang Ylang. In a pillow spray, it encourages a restful and romantic ambiance.

Ways to Use Evening Essential Oils

Relaxing Evening Bath

Add 8 total drops of evening essential oils to one tablespoon of Fractionated Coconut Oil – Organic or other carrier oil of choice. Stir into 1-2 cups Epsom salt and add to the bath just before entering.

Nighttime Linen/Pillow Spray

Add 8-12 total drops evening essential oils to every one ounce of distilled water in a glass or aluminum spray bottle. Shake well before each use and lightly mist around the area of the bed, pillows, and pajamas, being careful to avoid the eyes.

Aromatherapy Roll-On

Add 8-10 total drops evening essential oils to a 10 ml rollerball bottle. Top off with Jojoba Oil, Golden – Organic or Fractionated Coconut Oil – Organic and shake gently to blend. Roll a little onto to the chest, wrists, and pulse points as desired.

Feeling Back in Sync

Morning and evening essential oils can support your return to your daily rhythm, helping you greet the day with renewed energy and close it with gentle calm. Choose what resonates, blend thoughtfully, and allow the aromas to help you shape the way you move through your day.

Cautions: Always check with your healthcare practitioner before using essential oils if you have any serious medical conditions or are on medication. Do a patch test before applying an oil, especially if you have sensitive skin.
