Himalayan Blue Pine: High-Elevation Invigoration

Written By: Robin Lander

Smelling our Pine, Himalayan Blue for the first time might just be as thrilling as a breath of cool, high mountain air. There is something both magical and rejuvenating about the aroma of great coniferous trees, and Pine, Himalayan Blue essential oil is a stunning example.

The aroma opens strong, crisp, camphoraceous, and pine-like with a dry balsamic body.  A fresh cooling facet uplifts and then warms in the dry down. Rich in alpha-pinene (40%) and beta-pinene (23%), these beneficial terpenes contribute to a highly diffusive aroma that formulators will appreciate for bringing unforgettable, invigorating freshness to creations.

Read on as we explore the ways to use Pine, Himalayan Blue essential oil and get three formulas for a forest-fresh experience.

A Tree Thriving in the Clouds

Pinus wallichiana, also known as Bhutan Pine, is an evergreen conifer native to elevations of 6,000-14,000 feet in the Himalaya, Karakoram, and Hindu Kush mountains. It grows in a massive high-altitude arc from eastern Afghanistan on through northern Pakistan and northwest India across to southwest China.

Himalayan Blue Pine is named for its beautiful blue-green needles that grow 5-7 inches in length. Similar to many cultures around the world living closely to Pines, local inhabitants historically used the aromatic needles as filling for mattresses, as well as burned them as incense in sacred offerings.

Our producer in India traverses the mountains to wild harvest the needles and twigs for distillation. Highly vigorous and prolific, Himalayan Blue Pine is plentiful in its native environment.

We wish it wasn’t so, but the truth is well known: Prolonged and cumulative UV exposure can greatly impact our skin’s appearance. Too much time spent unprotected out in the elements can contribute to reduced moisture and elasticity, dark spots, rough texture, and diminished glow.
