Sandalwood
According to the IUCN Red List, Santalum album is classified as vulnerable – ecologically threatened as a result of its highly desirable heartwood, used for furniture, carvings, statues, incense and, sadly, essential oil. Encouragingly, this singular, semi-parasitic tree has branched out with new species thriving in managed plantations in favorable ecosystems such as Hawaii and Australia. While India is still producing limited quantities of the legendary Santalum album (we designate ours from Australia as ‘Plantation Grown’), New Caledonia has established numerous successfully managed plantations with its own species, Santalum austrocaledonicum.
