Patchouli
The Patchouli plant had a long history in the Eastern world before being rediscovered by natural perfumers and counter culturalists in the 1960s. It is a member of the large Lamiaceae (or Labiatae) family of fragrant herbs, which makes Patchouli a botanical sibling of Rosemary, Basil, Oregano, Sage, Marjoram, Thyme, Lavender and the Mints – and as versatile. Patchouli alcohol (or patchoulol) is the dominant sesquiterpene alcohol responsible for the powdery, earthy, slightly camphoraceous and dry-woody aroma characteristic of Patchouli oils.
