Orange Oil

Orange, Peppermint, Palmarosa and Pine oils are some of the more simple, and useful essential oils in aromatherapy that can be found on our O-P page. All have antibacterial and disinfectant properties, while Pine and Orange oil are particularly popular in household products. Pine essential oil has been used to reduce perspiration, rendering it a popular addition to soaps, deodorants and “sporty” type fragrances. It is used in treating rheumatic, muscular and joint aches including arthritis. Orange oil has uplifting and stress-relieving properties, and has been used to combat colds and ’flu, and help treat constipation, water retention and obesity. Peppermint oil is mostly known for being highly effective in relieving stomachaches, colic and headaches; like Pine, it is also used to relieve muscle pains. Peppermint oil has been combined with Palmarosa essential oil for treating acne. Palmarosa has been known to be particularly effective in skin care, including dermatitis, scars, wrinkles, and in all kinds of treatments for and all areas of the skin because of its moisturizing, regenerating and sebum-regulating properties.

Oregano is a powerful anti-infectious agent and has been used traditionally for digestive upsets, respiratory problems, and to treat colds, flu, sore throats, and fever.

The most significant perfumery materials in this section are perhaps Oakmoss Absolute and Patchouli essential oil. These two are some of the longest-lasting perfumery components from botanical origin and also act as fixatives, allowing more fleeting aromas to linger longer on the skin, hair and fabric.

Patchouli essential oil is steam distilled from the mature dried leaves of Pogostemon cablin, a plant native to India and found in the mint family. Patchouli is known to be an effective insect repellent and has been used to protect fabrics and clothes in India for centuries. In the West in the mid-1800s, Indian shawls and scarves became fashionable in Europe and were shipped along with Patchouli leaves layered between the folds to repel egg-laying moths. The scent imparted in these garments became an inseparable part of their allure, paving the way for Patchouli oil to make its way into Western perfumery, mostly in dry and spicy oriental compositions. Patchouli oil was also paired with Oakmoss Absolute, Labdanum Absolute and citrus essential oils to create the sophisticated mossy-earthy composition known as Chypre.

Oakmoss Absolute has little if any fragrance in its raw form, but once it is washed in solvent and extracted into an absolute, this green thick mass possesses one of the most tenacious aromas, simultaneously reminiscent of a forest floor in autumn and a salty seaweed-laden beach on a stormy day. Aside from Chypre of course, Oakmoss Absolute is used as a fixative in various degrees of concentration in all fragrance families and is particularly important in Fougère, where it is paired with Lavender, Tonka Bean and other herbaceous and linalool- and coumarin-rich plant essences.

Two other important perfume materials are Orris (Orris Butter and Orris Root CO2) and Orange Blossom Absolute. Orris has a subtle, powdery floral scent reminiscent of violet flowers combined with an earthy, cool, woody aroma. It is particularly important in floral and powdery fragrances, such as Violet soliflores, powdery orientals and as a fixative in florals, creating a soft diffused bouquet. Orange Blossom Absolute is one of the longest-lasting floral absolutes, and considered a base note by some. It is warmer and more full-bodied than Neroli essential oil and presents a fuller spectrum of these flowers. Orange Blossom Water Absolute is similar yet with a cool, clean character in its floral depths.

  • Aroma: Deep, rich floral aroma

Description

Water Absolute - What??? This is one fantastic aromatic oil! It is actually extracted from the distillate water (hydrosol) left over from the distillation of Neroli essential oil. It turns out that about 25% of the essential oil from Neroli distillation remains in the hydrosol.

Orange Blossom Water Absolute is thus extracted from the Neroli floral water. It is a hard to find yet superb oil for use in perfumery. It has similarities with, yet is unique from, Neroli and Orange Blossom absolute. Eden Botanicals highly recommends this oil to all natural perfumers.

Blood Orange, Sweet Orange - Organic, Wild Orange Essential Oils

Top of Page
  • Botanical Name: Citrus sinensis
  • Origin: 1. Blood Orange, Origin - Italy
    2. Sweet Orange - Organic - Origin - USA
    3. Wild Orange, Origin - Dominican Republic (Wild grown)
  • Process: Cold pressed
  • Plant Part: Ripe peels
  • Grade: Therapeutic grade
  • Aroma: Sweet, heavenly, joyful

Description

Our three Orange Essential oils are pressed from the peels rather than being steam distilled like most essential oils are. Use all Orange oil on the skin with caution and in low dilution due to the phototoxic effect of citrus oils.

Sweet Orange essential oil smells just like fresh orange peels, and brings a smile to the face. It is good to smell this oil when you are feeling a little low. It encourages a positive outlook and is uplifting to the spirits. One of our favorite ways to use this oil is to place a few drops on hot sauna rocks. The heavenly smell will quickly fill the room. Use on the skin with caution and in low dilution due to phototoxic effect of citrus oils.

Richer and sweeter in aroma than sweet orange, our Blood Orange has a light tartness that makes the mouth water. Blood Orange is also beneficial for migraines, SAD, fibromylagia, digestive complaints and depression.

Wild Orange has a deep, rich sweet-tart aroma unlike any other orange that we know of. Wild Orange essential oil may be used like you would sweet orange. It is certain to have interesting uses in natural perfumery and for other blending needs. In fact, Wild Orange is one of our best selling citrus oils.

Orris Root (1% Irones) CO2 Select Extract

Top of Page
  • Botanical Name: Iris pallida
  • Origin: Albania
  • Process: CO2 select extract
  • Plant Part: Roots
  • Grade: Therapeutic grade, perfumery grade
  • Aroma: Rich, earthy aroma
  • Note: Base note

Description

Orris Root oil is difficult to find and a very expensive oil. Our CO2 extract is not only moderately priced, it also has a wonderful aroma. It is blended with a very stable vegetable oil (15% dilution) in order to guarantee a 1.12% content of irones.

We also carry Orris Root CO2 extracts with 3% and 10% irone content (see below).

Orris Root is valued in perfumery for its violet-like aroma and its unique fixative qualities. This oil tends to separate making it a bit hard to work with, however, we highly recommended it for those who are looking for this unusual and hard to find oil. It blends best with fixed oils and excellently in solid perfumes. It will prove difficult to work with in alcohol. For blending natural perfumes or base accords we recommend our Orris Butter or our Orris Root (10% irones) CO2 extract.

We also carry Orris Root CO2 extracts with 1% and 10% irone content (see above & below).

Patchouli, Dark Essential Oil

Top of Page
  • Botanical Name: Pogostemon cablin
  • Origin: Indonesia
  • Process: Steam distilled
  • Plant Part: Leaves
  • Aroma: Woody, earthy, pungent, musky, aroma improves with age
  • Aromatherapy Uses: Antifungal, antiseptic, good for acne and cracked skin, reduces nervous tension
  • Note: Base note
  • Perfumery Uses: Great fixative qualities
  • Click here for more information on Patchouli Oil

Description

Patchouli is a sometimes misunderstood oil that has received an undeserved reputation in recent decades. Perhaps it was overused by a certain rebellious subculture, or perhaps its strong earthy aroma is just not appreciated by modern culture that associates cleanliness with chemical cleaning products.

A truly fine Patchouli oil is a wonderful fragrance that may not be recognized by many who claim that they do not like its scent. It is best appreciated when smelled in diluted form rather than at full strength. A good quality Patchouli oil improves with age, and we have four very fine Patchouli oils to choose from.

Our Dark Patchouli is deep and mellow. It can be diluted, used as is, or mixed with most other oils as a base note and fixative (and to deepen and improve the fragrance!).

Patchouli - Iron Free Essential Oil

Top of Page
  • Botanical Name: Pogostemon cablin
  • Origin: Indonesia
  • Process: Steam distilled
  • Plant Part: Leaves
  • Grade / Quality: Therapeutic grade
  • Note in perfumery: Base note
  • Physical Appearance: Dark yellow/orange semi-viscous liquid

  • Aromatic Profile: Earthy, musky, dry and slightly spicy-warm. Deep and tenacious, very long lasting.  The iron-free patchouli smells slightly cleaner, drier and lighter than our Dark Patchouli, but not as light and fresh as our Patchouli CO2.

  • Primary Uses: Aromatherapy, natural perfumery, body care, incense and as a single scent.

  • Safety Considerations:Non-toxic, non-irritant, non-sensitizing. One of the few essential oils that can be used neat on the skin - but you should patch test first.
  • Uses in Natural Perfumery: A tenacious and powerful base note that acts as a fixative and transforms all other notes. Adds an earthy and warm tone and deepens the other notes, particularly florals. Used often in Chypre and Oriental perfumes as well as in dry woody perfumes and in masculine citrus cologne type fragrances, and toiletries. Patchouli improves tremendously with age. To accelerate the aging process, you may choose to leave the lid unscrewed and let it rest on the bottle for several weeks. This practice is recommended only if you are want to make your patchouli notes sweeter and warmer.

patchouli co2

The CO2 process yields a very unique Patchouli oil that is fresh and lively. The aroma is not as earthy as distilled Patchouli and is more like the fresh plant material. Patchouli CO2 also has an aroma similar to Patchouli Absolute and can be used for a substitute for Patchouli Absolute. Patchouli CO2 is a hard to find extract, that is sometime cloudy. We filter our Patchouli CO2 which removes the cloudiness and sediment and results in a higher quality final extract.

Pepper, Black Essential Oil

Top of Page
  • Botanical Name: Piper nigrum
  • Origin: India
  • Process: Steam distilled
  • Plant Part: Fruit
  • Grade: Therapeutic grade
  • Aroma: Spicy, pungent, fresh, dry, sharp, tenacious
  • Note: Middle note

Description

Black Pepper essential oil is used in aromatherapy for arthritis, muscular and rheumatic pains, and it also helps the immune system combat colds, infections and viruses.

Black pepper oil is also known to stimulate the appetite and is considered an aphrodisiac particularly when expertly blended with other essential oils.

Black pepper is used in minute quantities in perfumery in a similar manner to how it is used in food – to add depth and pique the interest at the opening of the perfume (the top notes). It can add an interesting nuance to any floral bouquet and blends well with almost all oils, as long as only very little is used, as the tenacity of this oil is quite high. It is used in carnation compounds alongside clove buds and floral notes such as ylang ylang, rose and jasmine.

Use with caution to avoid skin reaction.

Petitgrain, Petitgrain Bigarade, Lemon Petitgrain Essential Oils

Top of Page
  • Botanical Name: 1. Petitgrain - Citrus aurantium
    2. Petitgrain Bigarade - Citrus aurantium bigarade
    3. Lemon Petitgrain - Citrus limonum
    4. Petitgrain sur Fleurs - SEE BELOW
  • Origin: Italy
  • Process: Steam distilled
  • Plant Part: Leaves and small twigs
  • Grade: Therapeutic grade, fine perfumery grade
  • Aromatherapy Uses: Antidepressant, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, sedative
  • Note: Top note, Middle note (Lemon Petitgrain)

Description

At one time, this essential oil was extracted from the very small, unripened green fruits of the bitter orange tree, thus the name Petitgrain, or "little grains". Now, however, Petitgrain essential oil is distilled from the leaves and small twigs.

The aroma of Petitgrain essential oil is a fresh, citrus-floral with a slight woody undertone. It is valuable for helping one to relax and sleep. Unlike citrus oils, Petitgrain oil is not photosensitizing, and can be used like its relative, the more expensive Neroli.

Our Petitgrain essential oil is a beautiful oil with a clean, fresh aroma. Our Petitgrain Bigarade is even better, and fine enough to be used as a Neroli substitute.

Our Lemon Petitgrain essential oil is distilled from the leaves of the Lemon tree. It has a rich, sweet aroma with a surprising tenacity and depth. Perfumers prefer it when seeking citrus notes combined with depth, and when looking for a lemon middle note versus a lemon top note.

There are only a select few distillers making this oil and this is the only one that is certified organic as far as we know.
