Overview

Nagarmotha (Cypriol) Essential Oil

Nagarmotha is an uncommon essential oil that we feel has not been adequately recognized in the aromatherapy and perfumery worlds. Ours has a rich, persistent, woody, earthy, deep, and somewhat peppery aroma with smoky notes of leather, displays great tenacity, and boasts rich, sweet-woody undertones and uniformity of odor throughout the drydown. The fragrant tuberous roots – known to French perfumers as souchet1 – yield the essential oil of Nagarmotha; used as a substitute for Patchouli in perfumery, it adds a distinctive and interesting note to masculine or unisex perfumes.

The Cyperaceae family features many grasses and rushes, the most familiar of which is the ancient Cyperus papyrus, the source for our earliest writing paper. The intense and pine-y monoterpenes of this simple sedge are augmented by the unusual cyperotundone, a derivative of patchouli alcohol – hence the earthy depth.

The name Nagarmotha evolved from nāgaramustā2,3, Sanskrit for a species of Cyperus4, in this case C. scariosus, an aromatic sedge plant also known as Cyperus or Cypriol. The grass-like plants are usually found growing along the banks of ponds and streams and in wet copses and marshlands. The roots can either be dried and powdered for use in cosmetics or distilled for the essential oil.5 Because Nagarmotha’s scent can create a peaceful ambience, it is highly suited for meditation practices.

The Cyperus genus – the plants of which were important incense ingredients in ancient times6 – is not to be confused with Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens).

it's like vetiver, but it's less rooty, and more spicy. I like this better than vetiver.

Nagarmotha take me away Review by

I certainly concur with many of the descriptions here especially leather, root, peppery. In the dry down the *bit* of smokiness subsides becoming a bit sweeter and sublime--much like vetiver but without the lemony notes. Reminds me more of vetiver than patchouli but still completely unique and a must-have; if you love those you will certainly love this. Not quite as persistent as vetiver or patchouli and I find that they will easily overwhelm nagarmotha; only a small amount of those will lend longevity.

So far I’ve found this to blend beautifully with just about anything. Personal favorites frankincense frereana, black spruce, jasmine sambac, cistus. A great compliment to coniferous oils in a forest blend. Most highly recommended with sandalwood album (plantation) as it softens nagarmotha and makes it particularly eroticizing.

Eden's Nagarmotha oil is an amazing smell. Quite potent, it definitely smells like newly-tanned leather... In fact, it actually reminds me of the smell of a new car's interior, with a slight, pleasant hint of black rubber, reminding me of the smell of a very clean garage, or like the automotive section of a department store. Many great possibilities it offers for blending, especially in leather blends; with, say, some birch oil and cade, you'd come up with a scent nigh-indisguishable from fine leather goods.

Eden's Nag is a must try Review by

So I was somewhat apprehensive to give Nagarmotha another try due to my first experience with another vendor. The one I experienced was more like an old stinky shoe dipped in a bad bottle of spikenard. I wish I had tried Eden sooner as I'm sure I would've gone gangbusters with all kinds of different perfume compositions. Small amounts of this OUTSTANDING nagarmotha would bring a real wow factor to what would typically be men's scents, beard oils. That it shares facets with patchouli, vetiver, spikenard & oakmoss make it indispensable it's bit of leather & woods make it friendly to so many dark woody & herbal blends. I found it's particular richness pleasant with lavender & clary sage absolute, fossilized amber resin and agarwood. Really the options are endless I'm going to have so much fun playing with this essence when I get a full sized bottle.

I tried this a year ago as a sample and it had a certain mustiness to it that well not completely unpleasant just wasn’t doing it for me. Decided to give another sample of chai and now I’m much happier this is much more complex it’s smoother it has a hint of everything from earth, floral smoke all while being very well integrated. It’s blended. Reminiscent of vertiver, more base, subtler.it makes my mouth water?!?

This one is a winner! I got this in the Earth Sampler Pack. I was more interested in the potential emotional and energetic uses than I was in the fragrance, but after diluting and using I can't get enough. It smells beautiful on my skin and now even smells delightful to me straight from the bottle. I find it very grounding, not surprising given its earth/root source. I will eagerly purchase a full-size bottle when I finish the sample in short-order.

Never thought I could actually consider any scent that was not floral to be intoxicating, but this nagarmotha has smashed through all expectations! One of the reasons I tend not to favor earthy scents is because to my nose, I can always detect what smells like at least a hint of body odor. There is NO trace of that whatsoever in this! To me, this smells penetrating, sharp, very clean, and expensive. It has a very interesting way of transforming other fragrances as well.

This scent is one of those you can't get enough of. It adds a slick woody/leather note to the base of perfumes and has a way of elevating the other scents. Great on its own. Brilliant when paired. Try it. You'll love it. I recommend diluting it for first-time users as it has a tendency to overpower. Try 10-20% dilutions adding 1 drop at a time.

I ordered a sample of this just because the name was so odd. My first sniff was not a good judgement of the oil. It was pungent, and coarse. I'm so glad i didn't judge it too soon! I went back to it and diluted it a bit and OH MY!It was a masculine deep woody leathery scent. I mixed it with cedarwood and vetiver and a bit of citrus and it is delicious and sexy. I call it leather and everyone agrees.

Leathery and Masculine Review by

Smokey, leathery, woody, and a little bit sweet. When diluted, the leathery hints become stronger. Its very masculine, but it blends well with florals if only a few drops are added to an entire blend. I found the woody hints very soft, and I smelled it as being more smokey/leathery than anything else.

A Fine Wood/Piney Scent Review by

Partial to woodsy scents, I ordered a sample of Eden's Nagarmotha (Cypriol). It leans more towards a pine scent then either patchouli or vetiver, but is within the same family of scent. It mellows on the skin to be more akin to patchouli than vetiver, but slightly sweeter without patchouli's overwhelming, pervading quality. A good woodnote, but not overpowering.
