Overview

Green Cognac Essential Oil

Our Green Cognac (Vitis vinifera) essential oil is an intriguing middle to base note perfumery component; its aroma is powerful, dry, tart, and wine-like, with intense diffusiveness and notes of green apple. When well diluted, it brightens and provides lift, adds a fresh, fruity aspect, and imparts tenacity to perfume compositions.

Cognac is a specialty oil that is highly recommended for natural perfumers. Green Cognac (also White Cognac) essential oil is produced from the wine precipitate known as ‘lees’ – the yeasty residue left at the bottom of the oak barrels after fermentation and aging of Cognac. Yeast autolysis occurs as dead yeast cells break down, contributing intriguing aromas that make some expensive vintage wines so highly regarded. Fresh lees have been shown to increase important aromatic esters and reduce unwanted aldehydes.1 But whether from grapes to wine or from plant to essential oil, wines and perfumes are similarly subject to the concept of terroir – the variables in soil, climate, and other environmental factors that collaborate to obtain the maximum quality and aroma in the finished product.

Distillation in copper stills is a tradition that has almost disappeared with the advent of stainless steel – the gem-like, emerald color of our Green Cognac essential oil comes from oxidation that only occurs when the oil comes in contact with the copper walls of the still.2

Please note that the aroma of Green Cognac essential oil is one that is difficult to ascertain directly from a bottle or vial. To more accurately assess and be able to truly experience the myriad nuances of this oil (any aromatic oil, actually!), please apply a very small amount to the end of a Fragrance Tester Strip – this exposes the oil to air for the ‘drydown’ – the process of allowing the oil to evaporate, making possible the appraisal of the aroma as it evolves during evaporation and until the scent no longer remains.

I love this oil, it smells floral and earthy. A little goes a long way.

Hit to the Dome Review by

I put a couple of drops on a tissue as a low-budget diffuser, and placed it on a shelf on the stairs leading to the finished basement. 2+ hours later it was so intense I could not walk by without my eyes watering and my head throbbing. I wanted to wait until the dry down but I don't smell any apples or cotton candy. It does make me feel hung over. Be careful.
On the other hand, I poured the entire sample of the litsea cubeba on a tissue and it smells excellent and lemongrass candy-like.

This is an eo that is used to add a little QI to a blend. I've made two of my own blends with Cognac, Absolute Sin and Absolute Divine.

A New addition to my armory of Forest Essences Review by

I am new to this scent and find the apple hints quite lovely - I use it sparingly in a blend specifically created to conjure the scent of an October forest hike: the tang of fallen apples on the ground, along with vetiver, patchouli, tobacco to bring to mind moist soil and decaying leaves - that unforgettable fragrance of Autumn.

Purchased a Sample Review by

I ordered a sample with my order. The color is beautiful. The top note was something I did not like at all. I opened it up and it smelled very cheesy. I put it away and tried a few days later. I've been trying to give it a shot for a few days, but it has a funky cheese smell, like bleu cheese or parm. I can smell something a little more juicy and fresh underneath, but I am overwhelmed by the funk.

Notes from the oils room at Eden:
Cognac, Green is a very strong, distinct scent, definitely not for everyone, and that includes the Staff here at Eden! However, it is often utilized in small quantities to add 'lift' to the top notes in your natural perfume.

will make you salivate Review by

Refreshing - will make you salivate - enticing - uplifting. I could go on. I agree mostly with Kayla's review, with the exception of her comment that she didn't think of this as a base note. This cognac is definitely a long-lasting tenacious bottom note - yet, like Kayla wrote - it pushes to the front! That being said - it is so wonderful. You just want to bask in it. I don't know why anyone wouldn't purchase at least an ounce of it. It is such a great buy - reasonably priced. A few drops will go a long way.

lovely boozy note! Review by

rich, sweet, and so, so strong; on first sniff it's like i've cracked open a bottle of bourbon, almost deep enough to take me into chocolate liqueur territory. the top is intensely, impossibly boozy. i wish it lingered a little longer, though, because it plummets straight into the drydown, where it blooms into an ultra-sweet, fruity, candylike aroma, very much like grape suckers or jolly ranchers.

after about 5 minutes, it changes out of its boxed wine-stained polos, gets a degree and a job, and mellows out into an aged, woody grape note with some body; not quite cognac, but closing in on ruby port. i too am surprised it's listed as a base note! it's powerful and punchy, but goes through its stages so quickly that it's much better suited for the middle or top, and it doesn't have a ton of tenacity once it's settled down.

LIterally apples and oranges from the European sourced material Review by

If this hadn't been offered as a sample I would never have tried it, but boy, am I glad I did. I source from Europe an oil from the same process called Lie de Vin (wine), with the same botanical name, and whilst both these oils have the same "understory" what goes on over the top is a whole other one. This is a gorgeous pale turquoise colour, pure and crystalline fresh. It has none of the funky monkey-nut notes of the other material, and is so much about crisp green apple, clear and bright. I don't find it overly alcoholic myself, although there is a nice boozy undertone, which enriches it. I am surprised this is listed as a middle to base note, as it carries and pushes right to the front of fragrances, although as it settles it becomes gentler and more rounded, like good cognac. Really beautiful and high quality - I will be buying more!

Surprisingly lovely Review by

This was a delightful surprise, it really does open up smelling very "green" and fresh, then quickly smells very much like a fine cognac as more warmth and spice (and alcohol) surface. After a couple hours it can be almost a bit sharp and is probably best in smaller amounts. Now I want to try to white cognac!

Smells like cotton candy mixed with the smell of a green lollipop. I have been waiting to use this in my blends- I am waiting to find out the perfect match with this and need to carefully create a blend for the spring . I am treasuring this essential oil and have not yet used it. Once I purchase more oils this is definitely going to be in order for Spring and Summer blends.

Bright and Pungent Review by

Just like a glass of fine cognac! It has a strong, sharp notes, and its very alcoholic smelling. Add too much to a blend, and it smells like you've been drinking. It dries to a more green apple scent, very bright and pungent.

This is the secret ingredient in my "Wine and Chocolate" botanical perfume. The cognac fragrance adds a tart, delicious, wine-like top note that delivers a burst of fruity goodness. It truly is a luxurious aroma (without smelling like you spilled wine on yourself)...

This is a very interesting and fun oil. The initial wine barrel scent gives way to an intense Granny Smith apple that really lingers. It made a fun "sweet hay and apple perfume" for my horse loving daughter.
