Overview

Organic Hawaiian Sandalwood Essential Oil

Hawaiian Sandalwood, as with all Sandalwoods, is a hemi-parasitic tree/shrub that peacefully co-exists through a complex root system with a select group of host plants.1 Santalum paniculatum, locally known as `Ili`ahi, is indigenous to Hawaii and is harvested from a family-owned plantation committed to organic cultivation and reforestation. The extremely rich, woody, sweet, and full-bodied calming aroma has amazing longevity when applied to the skin.

The Sandalwood essential oil most recognized is distilled from Santalum album in the Mysore region of India. It is an alarming fact that Mysore Sandalwood has endured severe population decline and genetic impoverishment (i.e., become nearly extinct) due to decades of over-harvesting, mismanagement of forests and illegal poaching – all driven by lucrative global demand. This is good news and bad news. The bad news is that high value plus harvesting restrictions are powerful incentives for the development of synthetics and the routine adulteration of genuine Sandalwood oils.2 The good news is that this near tragedy created a new industry in other regions for cultivating various species of Sandalwood (including S. paniculatum) using more sustainable practices – a successful strategy for redirecting market pressure away from this precious botanical. Sandalwood, an exquisitely fragrant and praiseworthy tree, like the majestic elephant, has been nearly loved to death. May your usage of Sandalwood be mindful, and may you be present in the magnificence of every application.

Eden Botanicals sources a wide variety of sustainably harvested Santalum species from reputable suppliers in different geographical regions that we are sure will enchant and delight even the most discriminating Sandalwood lovers and natural perfumers. Sandalwood oil is beneficial in targeted skincare preparations and facial serums to improve the appearance of aging, dry, or congested skin. The sensual and divine aroma inspires an ambiance of peaceful contemplation and lends elevating and centering properties to meditation and incense blends.

LOT 14: This sandalwood is warm, extremely smooth, and definite floral. The floral and smoothness of this sandalwood gives off a tropical vibe. Applied to the skin, it smells like I just got out of a warm shower. Clean feel to it. This is my 3rd lot of Royal Hawaiian and the best so far, I'd say. Happy with buy and service. Thanks EB!

Irresistibly warm, with notes reminiscent of sipping on a cup of creamy milk oolong while sitting in a deep, primordial tropical rainforest. I may not be from da Big Island myself, but I had a good friend gift me with some precious ʻiliahialoʻe lumber from a tree that went down on his property during a storm here on this island; this oil is seriously the closest thing I’ve ever encountered to that unmistakably smooth native sandalwood scent. Heavy on wood and smoke Review by

I'm just sharing this review as an alternate opinion to many of the ones here that had gotten my hopes up. Really, really wish I didn't have to! If you (like so many) find the scent of Mysore sandalwood simply intoxicating, you may be disappointed with this as an alternative, as I was. I find the Indian version to be extremely nuanced, including sweeter notes and an overall warmth that just...makes me stop in my tracks. I tried Australian sandalwood from a few different companies and was always left frustrated. This is my first time trying Hawaiian, and again, was left wanting much more. The quality of the oil is great--very strong fragrance and good staying power--however, the scent as compared to Mysore sandalwood is much, much heavier on the woody and smoky notes. Much less complex.

I am a Sandalwood fanatic. It's by far my favorite scent. The market is currently flooded with subpar examples of the holy wood, so I stick to Eden Botanicals. Truly they always deliver top notch products. This Royal Hawaiian sandalwood is strong, it has floral undertones, it's potent. Just one drop is enough to overpower some people, but I absolutely love it. My wife, on the other hand, thinks it's too strong- she prefers New Caledonia.

If you absolutely love Sandalwood, this is the way to go. The trees that they harvest are old, native trees on the big island so it has that true Sandalwood scent. If you like Sandalwood but aren't a connoisseur, go with premium Australian or New Caledonia. You will save some money and most likely be just as satisfied.

I've bought Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood from other places in the past, but this one has the best scent out of ALL of them. I like the soft woody & creamy scent this has & I like using this in place of Indian Sandalwood for Rose Attar.

Do not compare this, as it is its own thing. I find it extremely aquatic and medium density woods, slightly sweet. The dry down is completely different. I think the dry down is more floral and how sandalwood soap smells without the soapy note. (floral drydown) It's really neat.

I use East Indian Sandalwood everyday, mostly in my hair. I started using Hawaiian Sandalwood from doTerra and found it to be excellent for face-care after showers, clears and smooths excellently. I would not compare this with Mysore as this one has a punch whereas Mysore is more of a honey-soft-dreamy scent however Hawaiian, Eden Botanicals Hawaiian, is an excellent essential oil and I keep this in-stock at my home. Gotta love Sandalwood. I especially enjoy Mysore & Hawaiian Sandalwood.

aquatic top- pungent kick Review by

This one took me a bit to warm up to - I was at first sold on the new caledonian - which I'm still fond of - but i have gained much appreciation for this as well as the rare indian variety --
Starts off somewhat aquatic to me (which threw me for a loop)
and then it gets this kinda pungent kick that is actually very satisfying -
either side could be fun to play in blends with -
I Just finished a lovely blend with this and lotus amongst others for my pisces friend's b day
I like that it is organic and sustainable harvest - the australian variety is the only one left that i just can't seem to love

Supreme Sandalwood Review by

Oh my God! This is probably the strongest Sandalwood I tried yet. I am not sure how close it is to Mysore Sandalwood as I have never tried it (though I did sample the Rare Sandalwood from Eden's, and it's a bit different than Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood, might I add), but it has something special going on it it's own right.

The "Royal" in it's name is very fitting, as it indeed has a regal olfactive character. Unlike the "sweet" and mellow Sandalwood type smells that are popular, this one smells like a dry talcum powder with a "clean" overtone. Again, there's just something regal about it. This makes me think of what a Sandalwood temple would smell like, as it has that clean spiritual type quality about it. I guess in other words, it smells like "purity".

I get absolutely none of the fruity-floral top note or earthiness that other reviewers have described, and it is definitely NOT sweet or creamy in any sense, no maple syrup or brown sugar nuances like you find in New Caledonia Sandalwood, NONE OF THAT. But all of that is fine by me because this is perfect as it is.

My only gripes is that it is so expensive. I had to purchase a smaller 1/8th size and add a diluent in order to stretch it further. However, this is premium stuff and well worth it if you can afford it.

I dearly miss Indian album sandalwood, and I have tried Australian spicatum and haven't much cared for it. So I was dubious that this paniculatum would be any different. Much to my surprise, it has that warm creaminess that the Aussie wood lacks. It's also much longer lasting. No, it isn't the same but it is very enjoyable AND sustainable.

SIMPLY THE BEST Review by

There's a real good reason for the high price on this one. It's real, and it's fantastic! I just got four of the samples, and wow, this is so much stronger and longer lasting, than the others, especially the Australian, which is too weak for me.
This is a different type sandalwood then the Indian. It has the strong earthy notes and full bodied scent of the Indian, but it has this other top note of flowers coming through. The dual notes work so good together. This stuff is just amazing. It's kind of like blending Indian sandalwood with a small amount of jasmine. I'll have to save up and get a nice bottle of this one asap.

Strong Santalols, Often Jerky though Olfactory intensive Review by

Santalum paniculatum is fascinating, it has the Santolol a & b and whatever the paniculatum is feeding from gives it a pungent and most pungent Santolol aroma. Paniculatum lasts as long as Mysore, longer than Spicatum, it's very different and unmistakable Sandalwood. I can pick it out from the rest with blindfolds on my eyes. I do tend to reserve Santalum Paniculatum as much as I reserve Santalum Album, only as body scent, whereas the Santalum Spicatum and Santalum Austrocaledonicum are used as room/aroma therapy. Santalum Paniculatum is a purchase I'm glad I made. Don't get me wrong, I do love a premium Australian however the santolol within doesn't last and is not as healing for my body, personally. Santalum Album and Santalum Paniculatum are the best for me personally and I do adore Eden Botanicals' large bottles of each. I often times blend Santalum Album with Santalum Paniculatum then add some Santalum Spicatum and place 1-2+ oz, pure single bottles, in storage. These are certainly storage worthy single EOs. Thanks!

Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood Review by

I have been a fan of Sandalwood since the 1970's. I had only known Indian Sandalwood and loved it, my go to fragrance for its calming effect. I associated its smell with meditation and its fragrance seemed to facilitate my practice. As the years went by it was harder to obtain a quality Sandalwood. I guess it was diluted with a carrier oil. It just wasn't the same. Then Australian Sandalwood oil came on the market. Yuck. To my nose it was harsh and only slightly reminiscent of the Album variety I loved so much. For years and years I could never find that wonderful aroma, try as I might. Many companies promised there product but I was always disappointed. Then just this year 2014 I tried once more. Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood oil by Eden. Wow! It is amazing your olfactory memory. That smell, its presence was back, really back. I was so excited. For my samples I requested Sandalwood Rare. It too brought back the same feelings of the past. I would be hard pressed to say which I love more. They are both of excellent quality, the likes of which I thought I would never experience again. Thank you for such a quality product.

Different, but equal. Review by

It's been a lot of years since I've had indian sandalwood that smelled anywhere close to the magical and utterly distinctive mysore variety I last had in the 80's. That sandalwood was both soft yet tenacious in the extreme. Worn neat it would take more than a shower to chase the fragrance away. The lack of that legendary tenacity makes me suspect that either the trees that oil came from are long gone, or dilution has become part of the process at the source. I had resigned myself to never experiencing a powerful yet refined sandalwood again....then I tried the Royal Hawaiian oil from Eden. When I opened the bottle the first time it was like someone slapped me senseless. It is not exactly the same as Mysore sandal, but I have to say (gasp!) that it is it's equal in every way. It has a brightness in it's top that is unique. Some here have referred to it as fruity, but really it's just ALIVE. This sandalwood has an animalic undertone that makes you think naughty thoughts. To say that it is woody, or sweet is like saying sunshine is bright, or rain is wet. This oil is definitive and a genuine pleasure to work with in fragrance composition. Expensive? Yup, but a drop of this has the strength of 10 drops of the Rare variety, and has none of the sharp farty notes that I've come to associate with Australian Sandalwood. This is the real deal. Different, but equally as beautiful as the Indian sandal that defined sandalwood for me so many years ago.

My favorite of all the Sandalwoods that I have tried. There is a depth that outshines even the Australian Sandalwood that I like as well. I made a solid perfume using this Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood and other essential oils and it is amazing. Will buy a larger size as I know I will make this oil a staple for me.

This is a very interesting Sandalwood. To me it has all of the same base notes as Santalum Album, yet the top notes are a bit more fruity in this variety. As another reviewer stated the top note scent holds for a lot longer than a lot of Album varieties and it definitely has a place in my collection. Personally I still like the Album variety better for my own spiritual reasons but this is amazing and I feel privileged to have experienced it.

Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood; When I heard Eden had this I just had to get me a sample! I had heard that there were sandalwood trees in Hawaii and I was always so intrigued; "How does it smell?". Well it smells like the classic Indian Mysore Sandalwood, but better! Deeper, richer, stronger, more diffusive. I LOVE it!(and I love Sandalwood). And it lasts a really long time. Another WOW! I have to get some.

I had the honor to be able to tour their forest, and they blew me away with what they are doing. They are trying to recreate a Native Hawaiian Forest. They are trying to prove that if you replant the ancient forests you will not only be more sustainable but profitable!!! Using what they have built as a model to help sustain Hawaii's future. Amazing stuff!!!! ON top of all of that the oils are world class. A very high end luxury sandalwood oil. All of the efforts put into the forest exude in the heart of the woods oil. Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood is the future of the sandalwood market.
