Overview

Blue Tansy Essential Oil

Our Blue Tansy has a very fresh and alive quality – its refined and softly diffusive, sweet herbaceous aroma attests to great care taken in the process of extracting the essential oil. Blue Tansy's vivid deep blue color develops during the steam distillation process – the indigo blue chemical constituent known as chamazulene is formed when the essential oil components released from the plant material are exposed to heat.1 However, it is important for distillers to know that there is seasonal variation of the oil’s composition that is reflected in the chamazulene content, the percentage of which increases from November to May.2

Kurt Schnaubelt has a host of topical recommendations for the cooling nature of this blue oil, including pairing it with Helichrysum in a carrier oil like Rosehip Seed CO2 regarding the pain of sunburn and accompanying skin damage.3 According to Kurt Schnaubelt, Blue Tansy "seems to display its strongest effect if its maximum concentration in a blend does not exceed five percent."4

Blue Tansy essential oil is certainly important in aromatherapy, due in part to the presence of chamazulene. But chamazulene is not this oil’s only interesting and useful compound: 1,8-cineole, the signature molecule of the Eucalyptus species, is used by this plant as a defense against attacks by herbivores.5 Two other major compounds, sabinene and camphor, found in many essential oils, display numerous and complementary benefits for inflamed and reactive skin conditions.6,7 These qualities and more are what make Blue Tansy essential oil such a useful and well-rounded aromatic material worth exploring.

Effective Anti-histamine Review by

My four year old suffers daily from allergies, mostly in his eyes- which can swell up like golf balls! I do not want to give him Benadryl every day and wanted something more natural. I smear a drop of blue tansy, neat, on his cheeks and under his nose (along with a prayer!). It does leave a faint blue mark but it really helps. The smell is very strong but very pleasant- sweet, herbal, almost minty. At a drop or two a day it is also cheaper than buying allergy meds.

It is not toxic like its cousin tansy. It is sweet and floral, almost chamomile like. It only takes a few drops to enhance your blend. I love this blue tansy and highly recommend it.
