Overview

Fossilized Amber Oil - 5%

While there are several sources for Amber throughout the world, Eden Botanicals is the sole source in North America for this rare form of fossilized Amber Oil. Compared to the oil extracted from Baltic Amber, our Fossilized Amber Oil is extracted from 35 million year old Himalayan fossilized tree resin.1 Unlike our oils from living plants, there is no essential oil that can be directly obtained from the fossilized resin. Instead, the oil comes from a process called “dry distillation” whereby the Amber resin is processed over high heat until an oily substance is obtained.2

PLEASE NOTE: Unlike the synthetic Amber perfumes that are commonly sold, Fossilized Amber Oil has a completely different aromatic profile. The extraction process yields a dark, viscous oil with smoky, resinous, leathery, tar-like, woody-dry notes and hints of Pine and balsamic overtones. The aroma is not sweet at all and because of this it is not often used as the main note in a perfume unless modified with other aromatic oils. But when used in trace amounts, Fossilized Amber provides unique and interesting nuances in natural perfumes. This dilution dissolves in fixed oils and makes an excellent fixative and base note; it is not soluble in alcohol.

For the pure and undiluted version of this oil, please see our Amber Oil, Fossilized.

For information regarding the use of Fossilized Amber Oil in perfumery, please see:

Aromatic Profile: Smoky, resinous, leathery, tar-like, woody-dry notes and hints of pine and balsamic overtones.

Appearance: Amber to brownish-red, transparent mobile liquid.

Use: Natural Perfumery, Incense. For the pure and undiluted version of this oil, please see our Amber Oil, Fossilized.

Blending Suggestions: This product can be applied as a natural perfume as is. It is already diluted for easy use and contains 5% fossilized Amber Oil in 95% organic Sunflower Oil. It may be safely incorporated in extremely low percentages (less than 1%) for aromatic effects into an all-over body oil or massage oil. This product is insoluble in alcohol.

Blends well with: Agarwood, Ambrette, Angelica, Balsam of Peru, Benzoin, Black Currant Bud, Cedarwood, Champaca, Cinnamon Bark, Cistus, Clary Sage, Clove Bud, Cocao, Coriander, Cypress, Elemi, Fir BalsamFrankincense, Galbanum, Geranium, Jasmine, Juniper, Labdanum, Lavandin, Lavender, Liquidambar (Styrax), MyrrhNagarmotha, Oakmoss, Opopanax, Orris, Osmanthus, Patchouli, Pine, Rose, Sandalwood, Seaweed, Spikenard, Spruce, Tobacco, Tonka Bean, Tuberose, Vanilla, Vetiver, Ylang Ylang. “…the richness and depth of this fascinating oil … has incredible tenacity. It evokes in the most perfect olfactory way everything contained in the words, ‘ancient, rare, precious, venerable’.”3

Safety Considerations: No information found. Dilute product further per Blending Suggestions above if using in a leave-on product to be applied over large portions of the body. A patch test should be performed before use for those with sensitive skin.

The sunflower goes rancid pretty quickly and spoil the mix. Buy the pure Amber Oil instead and dissolve it in ethanol yourself. Much better outcome.

I can only smell the sunflower oil Review by

I ordered 4 oz of this because a friend had some and I fell in love with the smell. For some reason you can only smell the sunflower oil and nothing else in the bottle I received. I’m quite disappointed as I was looking forward to it. I guess I should've gotten the undiluted.

From the Oil Room: Please feel free to return the bottle for a credit.

Mysterious and Bewitching like Forest Sprites! Review by

Oh, I love this one! It is intriguing. I tried it yesterday and gave up: I could not smell anything. This is the first EO I'm sampling today, and I touched the very tip of the sample vial: right away, I smelled its warmth! Silly me tried the Amber blends when this is exactly what I was looking for all along. It's got a come-and-go scent that does not overpower and yet lingers. It's warm, it's resinous and a tad smoky and teases with its "invisibility" quality. This one conjures up magical visions of fairies and sprites. I love that it's already diluted for me. It would make a great solo scent and I look forward to blending with it. I think it shall be a bottom note and a great substitute for those overwhelming orientals that natural perfume sellers always use and don't fit my personality. :)

A new letter in the alphabet Review by

I've not heard even one review that indicates what I've discovered about this scent. Hopefully, what I'm about to say will explain the various reviews and the confusing and opposing views that our perfumers are having with it. This one adds a whole new letter to the perfumer's alphabet. The reason so many are having a difficult time identifying the aroma is because it doesn't vbelong in the category of organic, but instead, belongs to mineral. There is indeed a reminiscence of dried wood present. But the majority of the base note seems to invoke the thought of an underground mine or an old oil can. There is a mineral smell that occurs in geology more than it does in botany or zoology. And for that reason alone it has become one of my favorites already!

Amber oil Review by

First, because I can only do it in a review, I want to thank Eden Botanicals for allowing this experience at all. I want to praise their generosity.
As to Amber oil, I discovered I can barely smell it at all . It comes across as “oil” maybe heated up in a pan. I have bought 40 of edens oils and there are maybe 5-10 that I can’t smell well . I brought a friend to my oils and she couldn’t smell others that I smell fine. Then some of the oils have changed their profile to me completely. It might be a permanent defect or a lack of palette.
I did discover some thing though- this oil blocked other oils if I layered it on top. I have also learned that some of the oils need to be seriously diluted to have a profile, so maybe this is one of those. I still have hope that I might learn to smell it, but I will try to use this to tame and meld.

Secret weapon Review by

This oil is fantastic. Opening with a bright woody terpene-type note, it eventually deepens and gives way to resinous, smoky, and even slightly powdery scent. Very earthy. It is truly unique. I use some quantity of this oil in virtually all of my blends to add a layer of complexity and richness. It's an excellent substitute for patchouli, having all of the character but none of the cliché. Haven't found anything it doesn't agree with, and I have found it works beautifully as a way to really marry the separate oils one might be working with. It can step back and play a role of subtle support to the main notes in any blend, and give the whole thing a real 'je ne sais quoi' that would be missed if it were absent, yet is never too overt or obvious. This is a natural perfumer's secret weapon.

smells like your ancestors Review by

I purchased this oil as a sample to try (while really wanting just the Agarwood I ordered).
I was in the kitchen and kind of busy when I opened the package and decided to take a quick whiff of the amber sample. I opened it so unassumingly but was quickly transported into a completely psychedelic space. The smell was new to me, but it had reopened a memory that I *suddenly remembered the feeling of * but couldn't define specifically....Like I had known the scent all of my life and perhaps beyond, yet this moment was the remembrance of the smell. It's hard to explain. I just felt my deep, deep past.
It is woody, leathery and OLD, but more surprisingly, I feel like it is the scent of reincarnation. Needless to say I purchased a ton of it and will forever.

Completes an outdoorsy blend Review by

SO wonderful. Awesome tenacity--a little goes such a long way. Outlasts every other oil I put it on my skin with, even patchouli. I love the wet stone smell so much, like river rocks or a rained-on cliffside. The reviewer MD described the stoniness perfectly. There is also this very dry, black-pepperiness too that I just find very compelling. I know exactly what I am going to do with this oil...it will make many blends hugely authentic!

Smoke and heat, but dry. Almost crackling. The heady, almost intoxicating scent of parched wood being burned. Even at 5%, it is a very powerful profile that may threaten to overwhelm other scents. Use sparingly if in combination.

Solid, stone-like scent! Review by

This dilution is beautiful! Upon opening the bottle, I feel this has a very earthy scent. Not so much loamy or soil like, but truly Stoney and solid. Like a fine fossil should smell... Ancient and hard. I do pick up some subtle leather, more like leather gloves than a trench coat if that makes sense. And the smokiness is amazing. Smoky doesn't have to mean burnt or ashtray odor, this is very fine and well worth the buy! I also catch a little pine, but there's more! Somewhere in there, is this odd (I mean ODD in the most gorgeous and rare form) floral-spiciness!!! From top to bottom I LOVE this oil. Every note comes together seamlessly. For anyone trying to make and old, ancient styled smell, pick this up! It could be that thing many are looking for to take their resins, incense and other Amber type scents.

Leather & woody dry down Review by

This is not to strong. Leathery smell comes out 1st on the top note , bottom note gets very woody and dry down of the scent is pleasant & wonderful , ( if you are looking for a stronger Amber , up in your face & longer dry down & stronger , go with Amber fossilized , but personally I like the 5% cause my wife can't take the original smell , has to be diluted , if I wear oudh my wife kicks me out of the house , so dilutions is good for people like me , no joke )

I bought this oil because one of my favorite online soapers expressed a love for homemade amber perfume. I can't wait to make perfume but I have to say that when I opened the bottle, me, my sweetheart and my oldest son rubbed some on our skin topically. We all became so relaxed. I love the smell, texture and color. I think I will add it to some body butter. You can't put a price on calm nerves without side effects.

I ordered a small sample to test and was expecting a typical sweet amber. This is much darker, drier and primal. The main elements are smoke and pine wood. I think the leather is in there, but in my experience, dry dry woods much more so. I love this kind a thing...smoky. There is a sweetness too, and it is beautiful and captivating on its own as a perfume.

Complexity and Beauty of Amber Oil Fossilized. Review by

I have been searching for a natural amber oil for ages, and it was not until I procured Eden's Amber Oil Fossilized that I finally stopped searching. This oil is so complex and rich. It has an amazing woodsy body wrapped in something slightly sweet. Its strong and viscous, and has great staying power. It is marvelous on its own, but blends beautifully with both vanilla and heady flowers. I strongly recommend this very special oil!

An accord in its own right. Review by

The 5% blend of the Fossilized Amber is a great, affordable way to incorporate this wonderfully complex note into your designs. Woody, smokey, warm, and with a real sense of the age of the material, this dilution is much easier to use than the 100% Fossilized Amber, which is quite solid at room temperature. With all the beautiful complexity it yields, this oil is almost an accord in its own right.
