Overview

Cocao Absolute

Cocoa Absolute is highly recommended for chocolate lovers as the aroma is like that of fine dark chocolate.  Try using it as a rich middle to base note in love formulas or for adding a sense of intrigue to your perfumes. Cocoa Absolute seems ideally suited for environmental fragrances as well as scenting decadent soaps and candles.

PLEASE NOTE: Cocoa Absolute contains a small amount of caffeine; if highly sensitive or allergic to caffeine, we recommend avoiding this oil. Soluble in alcohol, partial soluble in fixed (vegetal) oils; please see Blending Suggestions below. Cocoa Absolute is intended for use in perfumery only.

Aromatic Profile: A rich, sensuous, mildly spicy, warm, sweet aroma.

Appearance: Very dark brown, slightly viscous opaque liquid.

Use: Natural Perfumery.

Blending Suggestions: Our Cocoa Absolute is completely soluble in alcohol. Dilute and add drop by drop to your blends until the desired effect is achieved. Although it is not soluble in fixed (vegetal) oils, it does impart its aroma when the carrier oil/Cocoa Absolute combination is gently heated and shaken. In this case, the absolute will settle to the bottom, leaving a highly scented, clear, light brown oil layer on top.

Blends Well With: Balsam of Peru, Bergamot, Black Currant Bud, Cinnamon, Cistus, Clove, Coffee, Cognac, Ginger, Jasmine, Labdanum, Lime, Mimosa, Nutmeg, Orange, Osmanthus, Patchouli, Peppermint, Rose, Sandalwood, Spearmint, Tobacco, Tonka Bean, Vanilla, Vetiver, Ylang Ylang. In base accords, trace amounts "can be used to impart exotic effects."

Safety Considerations: Contains a small amount of caffeine1; if highly sensitive or allergic to caffeine, we recommend avoiding this oil. Dilute before using. A patch test should be performed before use for those with sensitive skin.

This works great for diffuser blends Review by

With perfumer’s alcohol, I have made a really lovely reed diffuser blend that actually clears out in a way that makes it not just usable but presentable in a clear container. Since cocoa has notoriously been difficult for me to come up with a reed diffuser blend that doesn’t look like a muddy mess, the propylene glycol is the magical ingredient (with PA) to make the difference. This also works for me in a mist diffuser, for the same reasons, but it stays muddy brown in that application. A quick clean with alcohol when I’m finished and voila. This is not the cocoa I use on my body applications, only because of the PG, but as far as having great applications for other reasons, I’m ok with that one synthetic. I appreciate Eden’s commitment to honesty and transparency when it comes to their products. PG in and of itself isn’t a bad thing, but it does depend upon the application. Every chemical in existence has the potential to do harm if used improperly, so education is key. I hope they don’t stop carrying this because it serves a purpose for me that I’d really miss if they stopped carrying it. At least here, I know exactly what’s in the product. There’s many who attempt to carry a pourable cocoa that simply isn’t true cocoa and they know it but don’t label the PG appropriately. This scent is really yummy- and it’s a couple of steps away from the pure cocoa but it doesn’t make it unusable by any means. It works differently and can be adjusted for by accepting it for its delicious cookie scent instead of trying to make it fit into a place where a deep dark chocolate is needed.

This Cocao. Oh Yum! Smells like sneaking still warm fudge from a pan with a spoon, while decadent and playfully naughty. A dab of this with Ylang Ylang and Osmanthus makes a simple yet luscious Valentine's blend. Then add a bit of Rose, Amyris, Neroli and a tiny bit of Myrrh, the Cocao sits back and what comes forth is a mysterious, timeless scent. Yes, this is what an ancient Queen must have smelled like.

BEAUTIFUL dark cocoa note Review by

I've tried a few cacao absolutes from different sources and always been disappointed by the bitter acrid pungency. This is absolutely the best one I have smelt so far; it’s like leaning over a pot of dark chocolate fondue. Perfect for making products if you want your cocoa note to stay true and not fade into a generic vanilla or smell like fake synthetic chocolate fragrance.

Craving a CO2 Review by
Rating

Even though this is the first cacao essence I've smelled, I have no doubt this is a quality absolute compared to what other companies offer, as I feel I've hit the jackpot with all my other EB products. It really does make my mouth water (involuntary reactions don't lie!) but having spoiled myself with CO2's I sense that solvent extracts just don't quite compare.

I'll have to disagree with the other reviewers who've stated that this smells "just like real chocolate" because when I compare this to a bar of fine dark chocolate--melted or not--there is a noticeable difference. Not so with the C02's I have (Ginger, Vanilla bourbon, Coffee) whose overall bouquets are practically identical to the real thing. Does this smell gourmet? To be honest, I don't know--my nose is different and perhaps there are chocolatiers who make products that smell very similar to this. But if I were to rate this on a scale of 0-10 (0 being a chocolate scented pencil, 3 being Hershey's syrup, and 10 being actual chocolate) I would personally give this is a 6.5. I wish I could give it a ten but there is an overall piercing quality rather than the velvety one I was hoping for. Nonetheless, looking forward to finding the right blend for this! :)

Correction from Rebecca (review updated):

In my first review I accidentally wrote "I have doubt this is a quality absolute" but LOL.
NO...I have NO doubt this is quality, none whatsoever, so my apologies. :)

I might have been premature in reviewing anyhow, as I have no Everclear presently to dilute this...BUT, I was dying to let it warm to my skin, so I did dab just the tiniest bit on my wrist. My 8-year-old noticed immediately, grabbed my arm and inhaled deliriously. And after letting it mellow and sniffing it over and over, I have to agree...

Very fine indeed. Thank you, EB--and sorry for the misprint

Absolutely amazing ! Just like chocolate .... Really !
Since it's not oil soluble how much is needed to infuse
say a 4 or 8 oz bottle of carrier oil. My bottle is very liquid
not thick as I was expecting based on the description
If you love chocolate, get this ! You'll love it !

I got the sample just to try it out, and this is the best smelling "oil" I have ever had. If you love the smell of chocolate, and who doesn't, then get this. I have no idea what I will do with it yet, but it's going to be just a lot of fun finding new ways to use it with other oils. The possibilities are endless. Maybe blended with vanilla, of course, and maybe throw in some sandalwood, and agarwood oil, then for more top notes add maybe jasmine or orange or maybe ylang ylang, lime or neroli. Who knows, but I think it will be hard to miss with this one being so strong and fragrant. Great stuff!

Lucious. Delicious. Yummy. Mouthwatering. All these describe Eden's incredible cacao absolute. A thick, but mobile liquid (it will stick to the insides of your dropper) with the rich brown color of a bar of deep, dark chocolate and the scent as well. But one of the great things about this is that it is not just a culinary scent, there is a smooth, soft, velvety, seductive, musky quality to it that makes it very versatile. I use it a lot. It is of course really good with other culinary and confectionary essences like vanilla(of course), coffee, spices, and tonka bean, but try it with deep, rich florals like ylang ylang, rose, jasmine, white ginger, osmanthus and....tuberose. GAAAHHHH.... It's also really good with labdanum, patchouly, myrhh, vetiver, all of the balsams; benzoin, b.Peru, and b.Tolu, agarwood, blackberry(I made a tincture from freeze dried berries), raspberry(ditto), and surprisingly, mushroom absolute! GET THIS!!!

Best Cocao abs. I've smelled yet! Review by

I was very impressed with the quality and depth of this absolute. Others I have smelled have had an alcohol dominant smell masking the depth of the Cocao--this abs. delivers the real thing--you go to a cloud of chocolate heaven! I've been blissed out by experimentation with the Cocao and other e.o.'s like cardamom co2, and neroli, and frangipani to name a few. This cocao absolute is heady yet not overwhelming, elevating and expansive, with a velvet-milky richness!

I swoon whenever I open the bottle of this, even after diluting down to a 20% concentration in alcohol. It is absolutely mouthwatering. I haven't learned how to properly incorporate it into my blends yet but I can't wait to start experimenting. It's like the finest, highest quality, single origin chocolate bar I've ever had, in liquid form! I'm guessing if used in baking or cooking, the results would be out of this world.

This is a superb cacao. I am very pleased with this absolute, and I have been wanting to experiment with new blending techniques just to use it! A Holiday scrub with a body butter would be sinful.... I think this is perfect as a standalone, but there is a lot of potential for something that smells this terrific.
