Overview

New Caledonian Sandalwood Essential Oil

Our plantation grown Sandalwood essential oil from New Caledonia is extremely warm, sweet and ultra smooth. This oil is rich in α-santalol, the constituent that gives Sandalwood its signature woody aroma and is responsible for much of the beneficial effects.1 This austrocaledonicum species of Sandalwood, with its rich, precious wood aroma, provides a cost effective and sustainable alternative to endangered Indian Sandalwood oils. It's smooth, woody santalol aroma is rich and long lasting on a scent strip, resulting in a very long, deep, sweet-wood dry down. Iso-β-bisabolol, an active trace constituent with a strong floral, muguet-like, pleasant smell, was also detected in Sandalwood oils from New Caledonia.1

The Sandalwood essential oil most recognized is distilled from Santalum album in the Mysore region of India. It is an alarming fact that Mysore Sandalwood has endured severe population decline and genetic impoverishment (i.e., become nearly extinct) due to decades of over-harvesting, mismanagement of forests and illegal poaching – all driven by lucrative global demand. This is good news and bad news. The bad news is that high value plus harvesting restrictions are powerful incentives for the development of synthetics and the routine adulteration of genuine Sandalwood oils.2 The good news is that this near tragedy created a new industry in other regions for cultivating various species of Sandalwood (including S. austrocaledonicum) using more sustainable practices – a successful strategy for redirecting market pressure away from this precious botanical. Sandalwood, an exquisitely fragrant and praiseworthy tree, like the majestic elephant, has been nearly loved to death. May your usage of Sandalwood be mindful, and may you be present in the magnificence of every application.

Eden Botanicals sources a wide variety of sustainably harvested Santalum species from reputable suppliers in different geographical regions that we are sure will enchant and delight even the most discriminating Sandalwood lovers and natural perfumers. Sandalwood oil is beneficial in targeted skincare preparations and facial serums to improve the appearance of aging, dry, or congested skin. The sensual and divine aroma inspires an ambiance of peaceful contemplation and lends elevating and centering properties to meditation and incense blends.

I first thought I could not smell Santalol, but after blending it and simply rubbing a tiny drop on my skin, it soon became a very distinct perfume and my favorite. Woody, creamy, soft yet persistent, it is a fantastic essential oil!

I've had a 1 oz bottle for about three years, it has thickened a little and the aroma has deepened considerably. At first I couldn't smell it until I put it on my skin. Now its very strong with a lasting aroma.

Quality going down down down down down down Review by

New Caledonia was my favorite versatile Sandalwoods- I found it wonderful to work with florals but experiencing lot 14 makes me feel like I'm just throwing my money away.
It had a very apparent off musty rusty odor such as when distillation equipment is not cleaned.
Continuing this comment, because this New Caledonia is reflecting quite a few other bottles, I have bought the last couple years but have not commented on.
I really have not felt like cheerleading Eden as much as I used to. But there are a couple oils here I absolutely love and really hope they do not disappear, but this is something I'm anxious about. I cannot rely as much on consistency or quality. I have to admit I feel some sense of irritation, having to buy samples more frequently, they're more expensive just because I have to check the quality to know if it will be consistent or up to literal "snuff".
I'm not sure if Eden appreciates that our perfumes -these materials we buy for them are characters in them - if they're changing suppliers often or not really checking the quality well, it causes us to have to look elsewhere, we end up throwing our money away. We buy full larger sizes thinking it's going to be like the last bottle we bought, it can be a crapshoot. I am fully aware of naturals having crop issues, season changes and so on but I've been a customer of the store for near 20 years and have experienced past consistency of quality here.
This is something I would definitely suggest Eden work on and please change the lids.
Vanilla CO2 is expensive and even graciously adding extra lids to an order does not fix that they still do not fit. Thank you.

My favorite for florals-the work horse & complex Review by

I’m not sure New Caledonia Sandalwood gets the time under the nose it deserves. Perhaps with popularity and rapid harvesting it is not able to age gracefully before usage but I find it outstanding for especially my floral perfumes. The New Caledonia has delicate floral notes that will add extra highlights and compliment a composition- speak nothing of it’s rich sandalwood effect. I adore it’s price point and hope that never changes. Three cheers for the New Caledonia Sandalwood with it’s uniqueness, santal heavy aroma & floral aspects!

The best Sandalwood I ever bought Review by

This is hands down the best Sandalwood I have ever bought. It is sweet, but not too sweet, woody but soft and the best of all? It is so long lasting and strong for a woody oil without being over powering. A drop landed in the back of my hand and I was sniffing heaven for 4 hours.

Calm, Sweet, and Lovely Review by

I started with Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood, which I absolutely adored. Yet my wife and others found it too strong and overpowering (OKAY, maybe I use too much) :D Anyways, I still love and use Royal Hawaiian, but I recently purchased some New Caledonia with my order. First impressions from the bottle are positive. It's sweet and smooth, whereas the first impressions of Royal Hawaiian are more aquatic, floral, and mysterious, this is less complex and less strong. I would highly recommend it for blending, aromatherapy, or for those who aren't as crazy for Sandalwood as I am. You'll save money and still get a wonderful Sandalwood oil.

Definitely more "masculine" Review by

Although I'm not as crazy about Sandalwood as the majority of people, I certainly wouldn't wear it on its own, but I do appreciate its note in perfume combinations, in aromatherapy, and in cosmetics. And I have the pleasure of comparing two oils from EB: Royal Hawaiian and the New Caledonia sandalwood oils.

The New Caledonia Sandalwood is very straightforward, it's woody, slightly sweet, with a hint of balsamic notes, and just a bit of smoky flavor, all coming together to a more "masculine" type of fragrance. It's by no means sharp or powerful, but it has a sort of grounding stability to it, a strong personality.

The Royal Hawaiian oil is more feminine in my opinion. It's a softer smell, not in how strong it is, but in character. It's sweeter, and also less defined and more complex, like a forest meadow with its multitudes of fragrances.

Both are beautiful in their own right, and I believe it's wonderful that we have this variety to choose from, and we can use either one depending on what our needs are.

I adore this sandalwood. To me the Indian Sandalwood I got a sample of from another company was too weak and the Australian had a smoke note. This, this however is perfection. It's sweeter than the others I've tried and a bit stronger. It's just wonderful. When I run out of my little 2ml bottle I'm for sure getting a larger size. Thanks to Eden Botanicals for recommending this one to me, I'm so happy with it.

This is a slightly more affordable alternative to the East Indian Santalum album. It blends beautifully and has the characteristic warmth and softness of sandalwood, with a faint blonde honey-like note that I enjoy.

This is the BEST smelling sandalwood I've ever tried, and I have tried many. However, this is the only sandalwood I've actually tried from Eden Botanicals, so I cannot speak for the rest of them. What I especially love about this sandalwood is that it is very sweet. Although sandalwood is always an expensive oil compared to most, this is actually a very good price for such an exquisite scent. It may be my favorite of all the essential oils I've owned!!
